PSY 215 Module Eight Activity Template Discuss what it means to view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens. To view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens means to look objectively instead of characterizing them as medical or psychologically abnormalities (Stolorow, 2014). Just because an individual likes to talk about themselves does not necessarily mean that they are a narcissist. Maybe they are arrogant and have never been taught. Breaking our walls of defense down to make a connection with individuals helps us understand personalities instead of trying to label them. In recent times, people have begun to adopt a non-clinical view of psychological conditions—as differences, not disorders. Discuss the costs and benefits of viewing psychological traits, symptoms, and conditions in this manner. The cost of viewing psychological traits, symptoms and conditions in the manner of non- clinical is the clients are not getting the necessary help they need. When psychological conditions are not fully understood, most individuals are less likely to reach out for assistance which leaves them worse off. The benefit of viewing psychological traits, symptoms and conditions in this manner is helping those with possible conditions to connect. Building a community is important for psychological growth (Hooley, 2020). 1
Think of an abnormal behavior that may be viewed as a deficit or a weakness. Discuss how aspects of this behavior may be reframed and reapplied as a strength . The abnormal behavior that may be viewed as a deficit or a weakness may be reframed and reapplied as a strength once the individual completes treatment. For example, autism is growing rapidly in the US. When individuals go undiagnosed, they can have serious behavioral issues (Cohen & Volkmar, 1997). When these individuals are under control, medicated and trained to understand their struggle, when tested these individuals score higher than average. This is an example of reframing the autism spectrum as a strength. 2
