2 PSY 108 Project Three Milestone: Career Paths Analysis Job Description Summary Job Title The job I have chosen is substance abuse counselor. Job Roles and Responsibilities Counselor will maintain a case load and perform essential counseling responsibilities, including, but not limited to, screening, intake and orientation, evaluation and intervention, treatment planning, referrals, crisis intervention, counseling, patient education, case management, reporting, and record keeping. This position also requires collaboration with referral sources and other parties involved in patient care.(Syracuse Recovery Services 2015/07/01). Prerequisites for the Job The job requires a qualified health professional, as defined by OASAS, a bachelor or masters degree, excellent oral and written communication, needs knowledge of Addictions and Recovery, self-help group process and principles of counseling. Primary Industry or Type of Business Syracuse recovery services is in business and helps with counseling and human services. Connection to Psychology Substance abuse and mental health are linked because the psychological effects of drug addiction, including alcohol, cause changes in your body and brain. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help addicted patients overcome substance abuse by teaching them to recognize and avoid destructive thoughts and behaviors. Connections to Emotional Intelligence

3 Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation The job requires working with drug and alcohol addicts so self- regulation and self- awareness is required so that your not judging or criticizing no one and not get your emotions caught up in your job. Social Awareness and Conflict Resolution Working with people in general requires social awareness and conflict resolution but I believe working with people with addiction requires me to be more aware if their emotions and need more help with dealing with conflict resolution. That would be one of my main goals. Ethical Judgment and Empathy Addiction professionals accept their responsibility to ensure the safety and welfare of their client, and shall act for the good of each client while exercising respect, sensitivity, and compassion. Providers shall treat each client with dignity, honor, and respect, and act in the best interest of each client.
