PROGRAM AND CIRRICULIM PLANNING Christine Kaweck The University of Arizona Global Campus ECE312: Administration of Early Childhood Ed. Programs Lisa Dickey 6 December 2023
There are a variety of roles that influence the functionality within a preschool program. Two of these roles are teacher and administrator. In order for the school to function properly, these two positions are vital. Administrators oversee the entire operation within the school and the teacher is responsible for operating a specific classroom. The roles have similarities such as finding what practices work best to develop and grow children. They differ in the individualized amount of attention that is provided for the students and how programs are implemented. The primary role is to ensure that the program is running smoothly and effectively, providing a safe and nurturing environment for children. Administrators works in collaboration with teachers, staff members and families to uphold the program's standards and meet the needs of the children. Administrators are responsible for keeping the school operational to include all programs and services provided by the school. The size of the school will determine the amount of responsibility the administrator has. They are expected to manage and implement all programs within their school. The programs that are implemented must meet the needs of students within their respective grades and must meet the needs of the students family as well. Administrators must offer training opportunities for their staff members to stay current, they need to function in human resources, maintain the budget for the facility and ensure the school is staying in compliance with all state standards. My chosen age group to work as an administrator would be preschool, this age group is such
a delight to work with. The children in this age group are extremely inquisitive, eager to learn and are so curious about their surroundings. “In an early childhood classroom, there will be a broad range of ability levels. Differentiation is necessary to ensure that the curriculum is responsive to each child’s individual learning needs.” (Gadzikowski, 2013, section 1.4) Language provides the foundation for the development of a child’s literacy skills. Learning to communicate through gestures, sounds and words increases a child's interest   to learn and participate. When working with preschoolers, their learning needs are quite basic and at this age the children learn best through play. Most of the concepts that they learn while attending preschool are taught through play. Concepts such as learning shapes, numbers, letters and colors, which leads the to start to develop language and literacy skills. Play supports a child’s physical development and helps them improve their coordination skills. Through playing, children also work on their cognitive development, work on their problem-solving skills and build their social skills through interaction with other students. My philosophy, vision and mission for my preschool is to create a strong foundational learning curriculum for students and instructional techniques. We believe that play has a purpose and children learn through their experiences so including hands on learning and activities through indoor and outdoor play in a priority. Partnerships with family and their involvement with their child's education will help bridge the gap between school and home. Our vision is to provide a loving and nurturing environment to develop our students to become well rounded individuals. Our mission is to seek to develop programs and strategies that support our students and their families. We strive to provide the best education for our students in an environment that

encourages academic excellence along with physical and social-emotional growth. My program aligns with NAEYC’s indicators of an effective curriculum by keeping the students active and learning. The curriculum will benefit the children’s comprehension skills and as an administrator my goals set for my center the mission statement will be met. My philosophy aligns with the Montessori Method style of teaching, in that administrators are obligated to "encourage children's natural propensity to learn"(Jaruszewicz, 2013, Section 2.2). It also observes children in their "sensitive periods, or windows of time when a child is developmentally and intuitively most receptive" to learning skills and new ideas (Jaruszewicz, 2013, Section 2.2). As an administrator, I need to be aware of the concepts that are intriguing for my students and then use those opportunities to help them grow. Administrators are responsible for observing and being knowledgeable when it comes to developing children. REFERENCES: Jaruszewicz, C. (2013). Curriculum and methods for early childhood educators.
