For your initial post, discuss how you would best understand and manage dealing with culture and diversity with a teenage Black gay client and his family. The client is having difficulty adjusting to entering high school and finding a new friend group. While building rapport with this client, I would try to find out some of the things he likes to do. About one quarter of children are enrolled in an after school program, with hispanic and black children being two times more likely to participate in after school programming than white children (John Wiley & Sons 2020). Exploring after school options would be a great intervention to help him get involved to find other children he may want to be friends with. Additionally, adolescents in the LGBTQ community run a big risk of suicide. It would be important clinically to assess him for suicidal ideation. It is also important to try to get the family as in involved as possible. Teens and Teens apart of the LGBTQ community who feel like they have family support may be able to navigate to challenges a bit easier. As a therapist, I would work with the family to be able to listen to the client's needs so they can assist in ways that would be helpful.
