Leslie, Being a new student myself, I do not yet feel like I embody the role of a counsellor. While my personal experiences have taught me some values which might intersect with a counsellor’s archetype, identifying the ones that need development is crucial to becoming a competent counsellor (CPA, 2017). In John’s case, as you mentioned there might be room for growth given that he’s a new student himself. Constructive feedback on the importance of research, illustrating how it can enhance John’s counselling skills becomes crucial in his case. Reading your friend’s experience with a psychologist further exemplifies the gatekeeper role. Section F.9.b. indicates that counsellor educators are expected to support when a counsellor-in-training is demonstrating difficulty through a remediation plan promptly (Wissel, 2014). For John, explicit guidance on the qualities he needs to strengthen, along with actionable steps to develop and demonstrate them becomes essential for his progression in the program and to be a competent professional. If John is unwilling or unable to adapt to these expectations, John should be helped to transition out of the MACP program to uphold the role of a gatekeeper in the interest of future clients.
