There are many grand debates in the world of psychology. Still, none can be any more prominent in how one sees the research, than the debate over, which plays a more significant role in shaping who and what an individual is and/or will be than the debate of “Nature versus Nurture”. The debate itself is relatively simple. Does genetics (nature) play a more significant role in determining an individual’s characteristics than lived experiences and environmental factors (nurture)? Nature endows us with inborn abilities and traits. Nature refers to genetics and the heritable factors passed down to children from their biological parents. Nurture takes these genetic tendencies and molds them as we learn and mature. Nurture represents all of the external or environmental factors that influence human development, in how someone is raised, their socioeconomic status, early childhood experiences, education experiences, and daily habits. While it is much easier to define “Nature” and “Nurture” individually, attempting to measure “nature vs. nurture scientifically is, at best, challenging. Nowhere could it be possible to know exactly where the impact and influence of genes and environment begin and end (GoodTherapy, n.d.) History shows us that theories favored one factor over the other. At the same time, contemporary views and perceptions now recognize a complex interaction between genes and the environment in shaping behavior and overall development (Mcleod, 2023) . This was a fascinating assignment for me. I am currently 66 years old and was adopted at birth. Starting at a very young age, around thirteen years old, I often wondered and questioned how much of my thinking, traits, and behavior had to do with my biological family versus my adoptive family and the environment and culture in which I was raised. After considering most of my learning and life experiences to this point, I would consider myself a firm believer that both factors play equal parts in developing and shaping an individual. Given the research currently being presented, along with credible evidence and studies from the past, I feel that the evidence is conclusive enough. Question for the class: Do you feel like your developmental makeup has been impacted more by your genetics, (nature) or your environmental situation, (nurture)?
