2 Middle Childhood and Adolescence SPEECH Good afternoon everyone. First let me introduce myself. My name is Cedric Smith. I am here today to discuss the many changes and things that are to be expected as our children grow from the middle childhood range into adolescence. This is a very exciting and confusing time for our children. The development of our children may be accelerated due to the impact of technology and social media. Our children experience a steady growth rate from the middle childhood age well into the adolescence stages. This time period displays characteristics that show the importance of this time of life for the children. Let us investigate what our children experience from middle childhood into the adolescent stage. Middle childhood is where growth is slow but steady. The death rate for 5 to 9-year old’s and 11 to 14-years olds are the lowest and second lowest for any age group that has been recorded. These are the last years of full reliance on adults for basic needs. At this juncture is where they start to adapt to the outside world. This is where they want to begin fitting in to certain per groups. The behavior we see out of teenagers usually begins at this stage of life. Adolescents go through a major transformation by experiencing puberty. This is when the bodies and minds of the children begin to develop into adulthood. During this period growth continues and sexual maturation takes place. Hormones begin raging and the children experience psychological and body effects. This is where most adolescents feel as if no one understands what they are going through. My response to that is “been there done that; wait until adulting begins! And I just laugh because they have no clue what’s coming. The family dynamic is important in every level of development in children. This is especially prevalent in the middle childhood stage. Everything that shapes their way of life will
3 Middle Childhood and Adolescence SPEECH be based on the home situation. Eating healthy can be developed into a good habit if it is practiced at home. If the parents or guardians have no boundaries on what foods are consumed, the child could be set up for juvenile diabetes or other ailments based on the choices of others. What they see and do will become repetitive and develop into a habit. The family dynamic can have adverse effects on children who are experience puberty. They are trying to understand and adjust to their new bodies and mindsets. Children who grow up in less than ideal situations can have puberty begin early. Usually this is brought on by stress. If their parents are always at work, going through a divorce or struggling with addiction, or the effects of a bad neighborhood, these factors can trigger puberty at an early rate. Now, another thing that our middle childhood and adolescent children experience is socialization with their peers. Middle childhood children will make strides in communication and comprehension. They look to see where they compare with their peers and are not so much influenced by them yet. They look to see where they fit on the pecking order. Adolescent children usually gain allies in their peers. They are all navigating puberty currently. Instead of asking an adult any questions, they have each other to share these new experiences and maybe get some clarity. These are the times where some lifelong bonds are built. The positives impact of peer interaction for middle childhood children would be that they learn to communicate what they see and experience. Adolescent children are more vulnerable to negative peer influences because right now they are trying to find their identity. It may come a time where they try to prove themselves to someone and the results may not be good. There will always be some bad kids that act out to stand out on the middle childhood level. In most cases at this level, most children will be not be attracted to the bad influence or kid

4 Middle Childhood and Adolescence SPEECH in trouble all the time. It is at the adolescent level where peer pressure only scratches the surface. As puberty continues to rage on, the children are going through extreme physical and emotional changes due to the chemical imbalance that is taking place. There will be a lot of pressure to experience sex. There will be many speeches given, but when they decide to do this there is no stopping it. This is the main issue that adolescent children don’t get. This has been an issue in every generation. Another pressure that adolescent children place on themselves is their appearance. As they grow older, their appearance speaks loudly about how they feel about themselves. The pressure of looking at social media presents an image that most want to duplicate. That is the strongest influence right now. They don’t know that the virtual world is just that. And it is our jobs as parents and guardians to educate them on that. Many of our daily decisions are based on our sense of morality. Middle childhood children gain their sense of morality in the home or direct environment. These are the final years of their social conditioning, so their influence is high. They take these lessons as they grow through adolescence into young adulthood. You want a strong core of morality developed by the child. What ever foundation is set will determine how they see the world going forward. If they are not grounded and strong in their stance, any bad influence can take them and allow them to thrive in negativity. This is done in stages through each developmental stage. There will be some children that experience traumatic events. This may shape their view of the world in a way that cannot be changed. This is very unfortunate for those youth who are robbed of the opportunity of a normal life.
5 Middle Childhood and Adolescence SPEECH In conclusion, are children at both stages are precious and in need of the proper guidance. We can point fingers at adults who are striking out at life, but not at the adults who raised them. Taking the proper approach with care and empathy is a start. This sounds like rhetoric, but there are some who don’t know these basic things. I hope and pray that this message positively influences someone. Thank you and goodnight.
