Report
Integration of Research and Practice This week you have synthesized your learning this quarter. For this discussion, reflect on that experience and reply to the following prompts: How do you see yourself using your knowledge of research in your future career? How has your thinking about research changed because of taking this course? What questions about research remain for you? How do you see yourself using your knowledge of research in your future career? In my future career as a LPC, I see myself using my knowledge of research to help provide reliable and valid evidence through the many aspects of the counseling profession. By learning how to research, how to find empirical studies, and non- empirical when needed, and how to conduct research studies, this will ultimately benefit the expansion of my knowledge on how to help my client, how it can increase critical thinking during sessions, and how I can stay up-to-date with the different types of counseling theories and treatments that are constantly changing. How has your thinking about research changed because of taking this course? My ultimate thought process about research has changed by taking this course. I don’t believe that I ever took research classes before. Learning how to find empirical and non-empirical as well as qualitative and quantitative studies was the most interesting yet challenging part for me. Learning about the different types of articles that are out there will help me in my future career when I need to research a specific topic that pertains to or about my client. In addition, learning how to conduct research was the most enjoyable part about taking this class because it did actually peak my interest in possibly dabbling in research later on. I always said
that I would never conduct or participate in conducting a research study, mainly because it seemed like a lot of work, but that was before learning all of the elements that are needed to conduct a study. Now that I have gained knowledge on how to conduct studies, I am eager to possible join a research study after having gaining my license. Learning about research has definitely changing my thought process. What questions about research remain for you? I feel as though the only question that remains about research for me is how I can determine if the study I want to develop is worthy enough of creating a research study. What if I feel as though the topic is strong enough and has clearly not been explored yet; however, I reach out to other local researchers and pitch my idea and they feel as though the topic is not worth the time to study? How do I make that call and determine if I want to go forward with developing this study or I should call it quits? While I do want to be confident in my work, I don’t want to waste my time and resources that will not bring benefits to myself, my clients, or the counseling field.
Response Guidelines Read the posts of your peers and respond to at least one. Expand the discussion by asking or answering a question, offering an alternative perspective, or sharing a resource. Response #1 to Sara Poff: Hello Sara, We’ve finally made it to the end after a very interesting and informative course! In the beginning of this course, I was not interested in learning about research or even conducting research, and even said that I will not be dabbling in research after I get my license. However, learning about research and what it is able to bring to the counseling profession has officially peaked my interests. I believe that I was intimidated about how big and time-consuming research seemed to be, and while I haven’t actually conducted a research study, developing the quantitative and qualitative mini proposals was enjoyable and fun! This course has definitely changed my thought process about research and what it can bring to the counseling profession and how I can use it in my future career! I see that you’re wanting to be a school counselor, and answering your remaining question about research, I believe that it will come in areas outside of counseling in the schools. For example, I live in Louisiana and went to a school with a classmate who was being abused at home and the counselor noticed the excessive absences as well as the bruises and forms of excuses that was given from the child. The counselor contacted CPS and the counselor worked with them to pull the child from the home to ensure that the child remained safe. As a school counselor, you could potentially develop a research study about how children suffer through abuse at home and how it affects their mental health, physical health, education, and future. Great post, and hope to see you in a future class! Best, Callie D.
