Psyc230 Individual Review Homework #2: total points: 10 pts Please use your notes and slides for this activity. You should first provide your own answers to the homework (using your own words). After the homework submission deadline, you will be able to access the solution to the homework. Please use it to verify your answers. They are provided to help you learn the material and study for the exam. Note, the answer provided does not necessarily contain all the relevant information. There are a total of 9 homework and they will count for 15% of the final grade . 1) (1 pt) The definition of touch is very broad: connect the receptors to the information they convey. - Displacement of skin - Thermoreceptors - Pain - Mechanoreceptors - Temperature - Nociceptors - Limbs position and location - Kinesthetic receptors 2) (1 pt) Mechanoreceptors in the skin: connect the receptors to the function they serve - SA I - Finger position / stable grasp - SA II - Texture/ pattern perception - FA I - Detect if objects slip from your hand (low frequency vibrations) - FA II - Detect when objects make contact with the skin (high frequency vibrations) 3) (1.5 pts) Where are the kinesthetic receptors located in our body (0.25 per receptor name)? What is their purpose (0.25 per description)? Muscle spindles: Sense the stretch of muscle length and muscle action Joint receptors: Detect joint angles and positions, aiding in coordination and balance. Golgi tendon organs: Measure muscle contraction force, preventing overexertion and injury. 4) (3 pts) Describe three characteristics of the somatosensory cortex (1pt per characteristic): 1.The somatosensory cortex is located in the parietal lobe of the brain. 2. It is responsible for processing sensory information related to mechanoreceptors, nociceptors and proprioception 3. The somatosensory cortex exhibits a topographical organization, known as the sensory homunculus, where different parts of the body are represented in distinct areas of the cortex based on their sensitivity and importance.
Psyc230 5) (1.5 pts) 5.1 What factors can modulate the transmission of pain? Describe how pain transmission is modulated. There are two factors: analgesics and anesthetics. Analgesics can relieve pain temporarily without loss of consciousness. The gate control theory suggests that non-painful stimuli can close nerve gates to painful stimuli, preventing pain sensation from reaching the central nervous system. Other factors, such as nociception, stress, and anxiety, can also influence the perception of pain. 5.2 (1 pt) What is the cognitive aspect/emotional component of pain? The cognitive aspect of the brain is the prefrontal cortex and the emotional component of the brain for pain is the anterior cingulate cortex. 6) (1 pt) Connect the disorders and symptoms below: Tactile agnosia: Anarchic hand: Alien hand: The patient does not recognize his hand as his own (when out of sight), indicating a loss of the sense of body ownership. The patient can’t recognize a key when placed in his right hand out of sight The patient’s hand acts against the patient’s will and performs complex actions (e.g., pressing buttons on TV remote)
