1 Project Three Milestone Cheyenne Reese Southern New Hampshire University PSY 260: Statistical Applications for the Behavioral and Social Sciences Monica Faulkner February 17, 2024
2 Project Three Milestone Select the topic and explain why you selected that topic. Your response should be about 2 to 3 sentences. The topic that I chose is racial discrimination. I chose this topic because race discrimination and racism have been issues our country has dealt with since the beginning of time. It has been shown time and time again that certain races get viewed and treated differently compared to others. Talking about racial discrimination is essential for promoting understanding, justice, equality, and creating a more inclusive and compassionate society. While we have made great progress as a society to try to curb and eliminate racial discrimination, there is still much more that can be done. Create an annotated bibliography entry for your first article . Your response should be about 8 to 10 sentences that include the following elements: A description of the main purpose or goal of the article A description of the approach the authors took in their research The main purpose of the article "On Views of Race and Inequality, Blacks and Whites Are Worlds Apart," by the Pew Research Center, is to examine and compare the viewpoint of Black and White Americans on issues related to race and inequality in the United States. The report presents findings from a nationwide survey, which shows contrasting views on issues such as racial discrimination, opportunities for advancement, and the state of race relations in the United States. Researchers used a meticulous research approach involving conducting a nationwide survey to gather data on the viewpoints of Black and White Americans in regard to race and inequality. The report provides insight on the persistent racial divide and highlights the need for continued efforts to address racial disparities. Create an annotated bibliography entry for your second article . Your response should be about 8 to 10 sentences that include the following elements: A description of the main purpose or goal of the article A description of the approach the authors took in their research The main purpose of the article "Explanations for racial disadvantage and racial advantage: beliefs about both sides of inequality in America" by Peter Croll is to investigate the perceptions and explanations by individuals in regard to both racial disadvantage and racial advantage in the United States. The article aims to show how people understand and interpret the reasons behind racial inequalities from both the disadvantaged and advantaged perspectives. Croll used a qualitative approach, drawing on data that was collected through in-depth interviews using a wide range of diversity in participants. This approach allows for a detailed exploration of participants' beliefs, attitudes, and interpretations regarding racial disadvantage and advantage. the article
3 identifies common themes and patterns in participants' explanations for racial inequalities and examines both the perspectives of those who perceive themselves as disadvantaged due to their race and those who perceive themselves as advantaged. Describe the difference in communication style of the two articles. Your response should be about 3 to 5 sentences. Consider the following in your response: Do the articles reach a similar conclusion? Do the articles present similar information? Do the articles consider the role of visuals in the same way? Do the articles present the findings in a convincing way, and is one more effective? How do the tone and style of the articles compare, and what does that mean for the reader? The two articles, "Explanations for racial disadvantage and racial advantage: beliefs about both sides of inequality in America" by Peter Croll and "On Views of Race and Inequality, Blacks and Whites Are Worlds Apart" by the Pew Research Center both use very different communication styles. Croll's article in Ethnic & Racial Studies maintains an academic tone and uses scholarly language that is typically found in social science research. The language is formal, and the terminology is specific to the field of ethnic and racial studies and the general public would probably have a hard time understanding the information being provided without doing further research or looking into definitions of words. Whereas the Pew Research Center's article uses more plain language and uses a more accessible tone which is more suitable for a general audience. While still maintaining professionalism, the language is more straightforward, making it easier for the everyday person to understand. While both articles address racial inequality, they do not reach the same conclusions because of the differences in their research methods and focus of research. Croll's article provides insights into the nuanced beliefs and explanations around racial disadvantage and advantage, whereas the Pew Research Center's article highlights the wide differences in views between Black and White Americans in regard to race and inequality in the United States.
