When I first became a RBT, I struggled with dual relationships. My first client was, at the time, recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, Sanfilippo Syndrome, which is known as childhood Alzheimer’s. I was the family’s first experience with ABA and RBT’s, so we felt really connected and bonded well. It was during COVID, so she did not have anyone to lean on and speak to about her child’s illness, other than me, a person who was in her house everyday for 3 hours. One day, she asked me to go out to dinner with her because she really appreciates my company and felt like I understood her struggle better than the average person because I spent so much time with her daughter. Under the circumstances, I felt like I had to say yes, so I did. Dual relationships have been seen to sometimes enhance therapy, aid treatment strategies, and promote positive relationships, but it can also weaken the treatment process and hamper client- clinician cooperation (Afolabi, 2015). Currently and with following clients, I have not allowed them to have my personal number, only communicating through work related apps, such as teams, and this has helped maintain a client- therapist relationship.
