Concepts in Community Psychology 5-3 Final Project Milestone Two Krista Wehr Southern New Hampshire University PSY 442: Community Psychology
The Future of CP: Explain your vision for the future of CP. Include specific examples to illustrate key points. In c ommunity psychology, it’s about being able to understand other people’s social environment and their social interactions and how it could impact their health and wellbeing. I believe that Community Psychology should have a bigger focus on children and adolescence, as children at a young age are exposed to such things as discrimination, hatred, stereotypes, it’s important that we educate our children about social, cultural, economic, environmental. In today’s world we are face things like our children not learning the correct information on our current issues, if we can create environments of equality for the children, we as a community must battle systemic racism. When I was in school, I don’t recall anyone talking about mental health issues in my schools or how it can impact a person’s life in different ways. I never knew anything about mental health until I was in my twenties, I was experiencing a high level of anxiety and depression and panic attacks. I never told anyone as I was afraid of them judging me because of the stigma that was placed on those suffering from mental health. I believe that it’s important for us to educate the children on signs and symptoms of different issues to help them create a safe place in their environment and to be able to talk about how and what they feel. “Creating an open environment in which children may communicate about mental health at school will lead to more informed discussions about the difficulties they confront. When required, students will feel confident in reaching out to a trustworthy family member, teacher, or friend” (Hippe, 2020).
If we as a community can create a safe environment for our children by increasing awareness of their health and wellbeing and be able to have resources where they can access help within their community as I think it’s important that the community to obtain the necessary care and support without concern of being left out, or not heard and them to already have a label. I believe that having children and teens being more involved in their community helps build a stronger community. Key Concepts: Identify and analyze at least five key concepts in CP. Reference course resources, articles, and professional experience as appropriate. The five key concepts that I will go through are as follows: Empowerment, Sense of community, social justice, Prevention, and promoting wellness. The five concepts that has been covered in the course includes, stress and resilience, building community, community planning and social change, and context and support systems, as the social factor has an influence on a person's health and their wellbeing. It starts with the community psychologist and their research to discover problems within the community, and for them to use the information to find a solution and for them to emphasize the how the individuals in a community to feel valued and significant meaning. By gaining a sense within the community means that they want to feel like they belong, and to feel as if they are a part of something. If there was a social network which gives them encouragement, a sense that they belong in the community, make a support system which can include your family, friends, co-workers, with awareness of how the community can work together to help improve the difficulties that are in the community, requires an understanding of the community and can assist with problems and allow them to grow.

Individual resilience is defined as: behaviors, attitudes, activities, it refers to the person's ability to face adversity, and to recover from stress and difficulties. Community resilience is defined as: The ability of the community to use resources to access health care systems, by using resources to strengthen the community’s physical, social and behavioral health and adapt, and by promoting wellness for yourself and others around you. By using the resources and recovering from an issue that the person was facing and help them to create a goal that they will look forward to. Community planning, social change includes social justice, it also includes strategies that prevent social and psychological issues. Social change includes social justice which focuses on inequalities through our social structure such as, sexism, racism, homophobia, and any other form of discrimination. “Many of our social problems are perpetuated when resources are disproportionately allocated throughout our society, this causes social and economic inequalities such as poverty, homelessness, underemployment and unemployment, and crime” (Jason et al., 2019). Stakeholder Perceptions: 1. Are the concepts identified readily agreed upon or contentious? 2. How are the concepts understood by different stakeholder groups (police, educators, business owners, taxpayers, and so on) in the community? Provide specific examples to support your position. I believe that the key concepts I have stated could be agreed upon. There will always be someone who will have a different opinion, and there will always be social and psychological issues that a person will go through every day for the rest of their lives. We should increase community
mobilization which brings together stakeholders to increase the public knowledge and demand a specific program, delivery of resources and services. I think that the biggest key concept that no one will agree with is social change and social justice. I think it’s important to educate young children on discrimination, exclusion, oppression, and help build a healthier and safer environment. Community psychologists use system planning and thinking and inform the public about social concepts and processes. Systems thinking enables stakeholders to utilize data allows for more flexibility and response to local situations, as well as long-term learning (Hodges, Ferreira, & Israel, 2012).
