Christina Phillips Junior Early Childhood Education September 15, 2023 1 Introductory Paragraph My name is Christina Phillips, I am a junior in college, my major is early childhood education. I am doing my service learning at two places: the first place is Motivate Our Minds and the second place is Teddy Bear Daycare. I do my service hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Tuesdays at Motivate Our Minds at 2:30-5:15 pm, and on Thursdays I go to Teddy Bear Daycare at 2:30-5:30 pm, I have 6 hours of service hours so far. I am in two coordinated programs, and both programs are face-to-face. Paragraph 2 I went to the SVS volunteer fair and talked to many different programs I could sign up for. I talked with Teddy Bear Daycare, Muncie schools, a dance studio, and Hazelnut Christian Preschool. It was really easy to create an account with Give Pulse. For Motivate Our Minds I have to have a background check. For Teddy Bear Daycare I have to get a physical done, a TB test done, a drug screening, I have to get my fingerprints done, and I have to get a background check. Paragraph 3 The mission that Motivate Our Minds has been to help students to build character and to establish relationships through experiences. Teddy Bear Daycare’s mission is to provide affordable daycare to diverse families with an emphasis on low income families and students enrolled at Ball State University. Motivate Our Minds is like an afterschool program where they help students in kindergarten-5th grade with their homework and they do activities with them such as arts and craft, free time, and story time. Teddy Bear Day Care provides low cost child care to children birth-kindergarten, they do activities with the children such as outside time, and arts and craft as well as provide snack time and nap time. I think these would go on the physiological and safety categories on the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Paragraph 4 I will be encountering a lot of diversity between both places, many of the children I am going to encounter will be many different races, from different backgrounds, have different socioeconomic statuses, and many will have different needs then some of the others. At Motivate
Christina Phillips Junior Early Childhood Education September 15, 2023 2 Our Minds many of the children I encountered Tuesday were male I would say around 50% of the children were males and the rest were females. I didn’t really notice anyone who had special needs or that spoke different languages. Paragraph 5 I believe people engage in volunteer services because it makes them feel better about themselves as well as it gives them a sense of accomplishment. When I think of volunteer activities the picture I see is people on the side of the road picking up trash that other people have thrown out their car windows. I think of this because I’ve watched many Tv shows and Movies where this is what people do when they volunteer their time for some reason. When I think of a typical volunteer I think of someone who is very kind and has a passion for what they do. I do think there is value in volunteering because I think that it’s something that gives back to your community and it often makes the people volunteering realize that they like the type of work that they are doing while they are volunteering. Paragraph 6 While I am completing my service hours I will be helping children with their homework and creating activities for the children to do in the classrooms. To get started with my service hours all I did was sign up for them then go to the place they were at, for Motivate Our Minds there was a SVS vehicle and for Teddy Bear Daycare I had to drive because there wasn’t an approved driver to drive the SVS vehicle for that program. I have interacted with my program coordinator so far in my service learning experience. Paragraph 7 Three skills that I bring to my service learning are my organization, commitment, and leadership. I think that I am organized enough to help keep the children focused on their work or on the activity they are supposed to be working on. I think my commitment is pretty good, I try not to miss things like class, work, etc. unless there is an actual reason why like me being sick, not able to get there, or if something were to happen family wise or to my dog. I think my leadership will help to keep the kids focused and they will want to listen more to me when I try to keep them focused on their homework.
Christina Phillips Junior Early Childhood Education September 15, 2023 3 Paragraph 8 I think that I will be able to find out if I will like working in a classroom, and if I will enjoy working primarily with children or not. I think that the professional transferable skills I will get from this experience will be time management because I have classes as well as work to do during the day before my service learning so I will have to learn how to manage my time better to be able to get there on time. Another transferable skill will be communication. I will learn how to communicate with people better during my experience with service learning. Paragraph 9 I always thought children were more difficult to work with before I started my service learning hours because I haven’t worked with children much before this. I don’t have much bias towards the population that I’m working with.
