2 Module 1 Discussion: Reconciling Science and Social Work Perspectives Both science and social work provide essential perspectives on addiction. Scientific views on addiction, such as the biological, psychological, and sociocultural perspectives, offer valuable insights contributing to the condition. On the other hand, social work perspectives tend to take a more holistic approach, considering the biological, psychological, sociocultural, and developmental factors that lead to an individual’s addiction. Since the scientific and social work perspectives consider nature and nurture as critical factors that lead to addiction, reconciling these two perspectives offers a more wide-ranging understanding of this complex disorder. From a scientific perspective, both nature and nurture play a significant role in an individual’s addiction. Researchers have examined the impact of genetic variations on addiction risk and recovery and the concept of gene-environment interaction, implying that certain genetic variations enhance the risk of addiction when combined with certain environmental factors (Kim & Park, 2018). In his book on the relative role of nature and nurture in the development of addictions, Levinthal (2013) discusses the numerous approaches through which genetics and environment interact to influence addiction risk. The author explains that certain genetic variations can highly expose an individual to the effects of drugs or alcohol. At the same time, environmental factors such as stress or exposure to drugs or alcohol for a young person can also increase the risk of developing an addiction (Levinthal, 2013). According to the scholar, the concept of gene-environment interaction means that the impact of genetics on addiction risk may be enhanced by the environment in which an individual experiences life (Levinthal, 2013). Overall, from the scientific perspective, the development of addiction is influenced by both nature and nurture, and the relative significance of each may differ depending on the specific circumstances of the affected person.
3 Social workers also perceive nature and nurture as primary factors leading to an individual’s addiction. The care providers support the finding that certain genetic variations may make an individual more vulnerable to the effects of drugs or alcohol (Asadi & Mandolakani, 2022). This realization informs their decisions to provide support and resources to address these biological factors in treatment and recovery. Social workers also consider the role of environmental and experiential factors, such as stress, exposure to drugs or alcohol at a young age, and social support in developing and maintaining addiction interventions (Unegbu, 2020). The concept of gene-environment interaction is also accepted among social workers, especially when developing treatment and recovery for affected persons. In this regard, they emphasize addressing the genetic and environmental factors contributing to an individual’s addiction. Largely, social workers adopt a comprehensive approach to working with addicted persons, considering the complex interplay between nature and nurture in addiction. From social and scientific perspectives, nature and nurture are essential factors in the development and maintenance of an addiction. Reconciling these two perspectives on these facets can provide a more wide-ranging understanding of this complex disorder and more effective approaches to treatment and recovery. Therefore, approaching addiction from a multidisciplinary perspective by incorporating scientific and social work insights on nature and nurture is essential in understanding the disorder. This approach may entail incorporating evidence-based treatments and interventions with a holistic approach to supporting individuals in overcoming their addiction and attaining long-term recovery.
