Masks most times hide our true self.We tend to mask ourselves probably because we don't feel content by who we are.We then go on to look and admire the masks others are wearing and then want to look like them, and then feel a sense of emptiness till we come to appreciate our true self without any masks at all. The above is an evaluation of Adames , (2012, May 25). Identity short film. And I would want to believe that most , if not all teenagers have gone through this masquerade of identification. In transitioning from the identification stage into the identity formation stage where teenagers start shaping their own world in their unique ways, this stage of identity formation as opined by Erikson (1968) supposes that at this point in life the teenager is faced by Identity Vs role confusion. He also opines that it is it at this stage identity refers to a sense of who one is as a person and as a contributor to society. It is also at this point that a sense of wellbeing and a sense of being at home in one’s body , a sense of direction in one’s life and a sense of mattering to those who count hit the teenager pelts the teenager. And this sense of mattering to others could be the reason confusion kicks in for teenagers to desire a “mask” to belong.A fitting in to be recognized and esteemed. For example, I recall the times I took my mum’s special toiletries to school to show off my ability to be a grown up lady with a make-up kit and all the cute toiletries any growing girl would admire, all for showing off to belong. I also recall times in my teenage years when I put pressure on my mum to buy me certain items because I wanted to be like other girls. I also recall how I used to compete in class with certain kids so that I could outsmart them. I also recall the prom nights, and how the boys would go extra ordinary miles to hire Limousines to come and pick up girls for the prom dance. There could be no explanation other than Marcia’s stages of identity development where it is Who am I and why am I?It is where a teenager is driven by a need to matter to others in life as revealed in the Dickie, (2014, February 1). Marcia’s states of adolescent identity development [Video]. Therefore, Identity Formation in Adolescence (Ages 12 24) as opined by Erikson (1968) believes the primary psychosocial task of adolescence is the formation of identity. Therefore, he called the developmental conflict identity versus role confusion. There are several contributing factors to the formation of identity. The onset of puberty during adolescence leads to newfound cognitive skills and physical abilities (Kroger, 2004). In addition, increased independence and autonomy leads to greater interactions with neighborhoods, communities, and schools. According to Erikson (1968), this allows the individual to explore vocations, ideologies, and relationships. He gives particular attention to the career domain, stating “In general, it is the inability to settle on an occupational identity which disturbs most young people” (Erikson, 1968, p. 135). New expectations of adult responsibilities are gradually assumed as the adolescent matures. With adulthood on the horizon, eventually the twin identity questions emerge: “Who am I?” and “What is my place in this world?” (McAdams, Josselson, & Lieblich, 2006). When the individual is able to assess their personal attributes and match
these with outlets for expression available in the environment, Erikson (1963) would say identity has been formed. However, when the individual is unable to manage this developmental task, role confusion occurs. Question: How should adults(teachers and parents ) help adolescents responsibly transition into the role formation without distorting the new identity? How should their identity and role formation be channeled correctly without a mental.social or even psychological distortion of this role?
