Description of Theory of pain Introduction Pain involves an unpleasant emotional and sensory experience that results when there is actual or potential tissue damage. The presentation of pain varies from one individual to another even if they have the same types of injuries (Trachsel & Cascella, 2020). There are various factors which influence how an individual perceive pain including; psychological, social and biological factors. This paper seeks to elaborate on the theory of pain. Theories of pain There are various theories which explain about pain including; intensity theory, pattern theory, specificity theory, neuromatrix model, cartesian dualism theory, biopsychosocial and gate control theory. The intensity theory elaborates on the role of the dorsal horn neurons in the processing and transmission of pain (Trachsel & Cascella, 2020). The patter theory states that there are sensations which relay specific signals to the brain whereas the specificity theory describes the presence of the various receptors in the skin which enables an individual to discriminate between various sensations. Neuromatrix model explains that the central nervous system is responsible for producing the sensations of pain. The cartesian dualistic theory elaborated that pain was n exclusive phenomena which can either be caused by psychological or physical injury. The gate control theory that the pain must always pass through three parts in the spinal cord before getting to the brain. In cases where gate closes the signal does not reach the brain while in cases where the intensity of the pain is high, the gate opens resulting to a sensation of pain. The biopsychosocial model elaborates that pain mainly results when there is interaction between various factors including; sociological, biological and psychosocial
(Trachsel & Cascella, 2020). There is need to utilize the biopsychosocial theory when treating a patient who presents with pain. Conclusion To sum up, pain is a unpleasant sensory and emotional response that occurs due to injury. The experiences of pain vary from one person to another. Understanding the theories of aim plays a role in enabling the healthcare provider understand the reasons behind the pain that patients present with and therefore treat them effectively.
