2 3 Songs Music is an expressive medium with great potential to affect our emotions, thoughts and actions. Songs can inspire, motivate or comfort us depending on their message and mood - they may motivate or soothe depending on how the lyrics were composed and delivered. In this essay I will analyze three songs which have had an influence on my behavior and thought processes using concepts and theories from psychology as part of an in-depth examination into human agency theory, social identity theory and attachment theory as they pertain to my personal development and worldview. The first song to affect me was Journey's "Don't Stop Believin" because it symbolizes human agency which is one free will and independency to take action (Parsell et al., 2016). Psychology helps us understand how people influence their lives and surroundings via human agency. This song inspires me to chase my ambitions despite obstacles and uncertainty. With lines like "Don't stop believing, hold onto that feeling", it inspires me to be optimistic and enjoy every step of my path. Music affects behavior and thinking processes; hence this song has transformed both favorably and badly. This music made me more happy, upbeat, and curious in my surroundings. Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Mary Lambert's Same Love song's concept of social identity, defined as an individual's perception of themselves based on group membership shaped my conduct and thinking (McLeod, 2023). Psychology's social identity topic illuminates how individuals identify themselves and others in social categories. Lyrics in this song challenge LGBTQ+ stereotypes and urge for love and acceptance. At initially hearing this song in 2012, its message and bravery touched me. It raised awareness of sexual orientation and gender identity issues, which affected my behavior and thinking. My experience has increased my respect and
3 sensitivity for human uniqueness and dignity, especially in race and ethnicity. The song also resonated because it explored people's relationships with social categories like self and others. Ludacris and Mary J. Blige's Runaway Love has had the third greatest influence over my behavior and thinking. Its lyrics illustrate attachment theory which encompasses psychological, evolutionary and ethological theories pertaining to relationships among humans (Mcleod, 2023). Attachment theory is one of the core tenets in psychology, detailing how emotional bonds formed by children with their caregivers have an enduring effect on both their personality and relationships later in life (Mcleod, 2023). This song conveys the reality of abusive or neglectful households by following three female characters as they flee, only to encounter further danger and hardship after joining society on their own. I heard it and was deeply moved by its words. Listening to this song profoundly altered both my behavior and thinking by increasing awareness of social problems faced by many children and families today, such as unfair treatment from social services providers. Through its lyrics, I gained more compassion for others in need as it focused on attachment theory - an essential way of understanding how early experiences shape one's well-being and development. In conclusion, songs can have a powerful influence on our behavior and thinking by drawing connections between psychological concepts and theories and the songs themselves. I analyzed three songs' influence on my personal development using human agency, social identity theory, and attachment theory as examples; these songs inspired me to be more proactive, empathetic, and compassionate with my daily activities and relationships. Listening to songs that resonate with us may provide us with another means of deepening self-awareness, self- expression, and well-being.
