1 Module 6 Discussion Board In the video, the patient, Sarah, is experiencing ambivalence when it comes to changing her routine by incorporating regular gym sessions. Her ambivalence is characterized by both sustain talk and change talk. On the side of change talk, Sarah expresses her desire for change by stating that she wants to channel her negative energy into something positive, which, in her case, means going to the gym more often. She recognizes the benefits of this change, such as stress relief and improved relaxation, and she even sets small goals, showing her commitment to making this positive change (Robinson, 2019). However, there is also evident sustain talk. Sarah seems resistant to change when she admits that, after a long day at work, her immediate inclination is to go home, eat, and relax, making it challenging to motivate herself to go to the gym. She also mentions that her confidence in sticking to the gym routine is not very high, indicating some self-doubt. Additionally, she suggests needing external rewards, like a bath bomb, to motivate herself to maintain her gym commitment (Robinson, 2019). The therapist in the video effectively responds to Sarah's ambivalence using Motivational Interviewing techniques. They employ open-ended questions to encourage Sarah to express her thoughts and feelings, reflect on what she says, show empathy and understanding, and provide affirmations to boost her confidence (Robinson, 2019). The therapist also collaborates with Sarah to set achievable goals, starting with two days a week, and helps her clarify her reasons for wanting to make this change. In my personal experience, I have encountered similar ambivalence when trying to change habits. For instance, when attempting to establish a regular exercise routine, I desired change due to health and energy improvement goals. However, I also faced resistance rooted in
2 the discomfort of working out and fear of failing to maintain the routine. Recognizing and addressing these conflicting feelings with a structured plan and external motivators played a crucial role in successfully making the change.
