Course Pre-requisites, Co-requisites, and/or other restrictions There are no pre-requisites, co-requisites, and/or other restrictions. This course is open to students at all academic levels. Course Description This is a one-hour credit preparatory course for students seeking an internship, part-time job or full-time job. Students will research potential internship sites and develop a plan for finding an internship. This will be accomplished through the use of career assessments, informational interviews, and development of a career plan. Students will prepare resumes, develop effective interviewing skills, explore networking, and use job search techniques. Course information will be conveyed through reading, homework assignments, internet searches, and discussions. Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes Undergraduate degree program learning goals embedded in this course and the assessment techniques are summarized below: Students will be able to write clearly, correctly, and concisely. Students will become proficient in the use of technology (accessing course materials in Microsoft Teams, accessing University Career Center resources using Handshake, and use of Internet for research). Course Objectives: 1. Self-Assessment – Students will identify personal interests, values, and skills that will assist them with occupational exploration and career development. 2. Occupational Exploration – Students will explore possible career pathways through the collection and analysis

Media used for data collection includes written material, internet sites, informational interviewing, and use of various resources as identified by the instructor. Students will participate in two informational interviews in a field of interest. 3. Job Search Strategies – Students will become aware of and learn how to utilize various job search strategies. These strategies will include, but not be limited to, traditional networking, electronic networking, unsolicited inquiry, job banks, as well as services provided by the University Career Center. Students will develop professional resumes, cover letters, and thank you letters. 4. Interviewing Approaches – Students will learn about various interview styles and formats, including behavioral and targeted selection interviewing, group interviews, phone interviews, and case interview methods. Developing effective interview strategies will be reinforced through the participation in a practice interview. There are also many on-line books and eBooks that will be used during the semester, which are easily accessed through the University Career Center’s site and the McDermott Library. A UTD NetID and Password, along with a UTD email account are required to access the reading material. Students have a free Handshake account in order to access certain materials through the University Career Center. Go to utdallas.edu/career/handshake/ to begin the activation process. Course Syllabus Page 3 Course Grading: A. Class Assignments The assignments and specific activities will be posted in eLearning for the class : CGS/CLDP/NSC/PSY/SPAU 4193 Internship Preparation. Course documents can be printed or saved to your computer. All work must be typed, unless told otherwise, using one-inch margins, double-spaced, with 12- point Times New Roman font. Assignments will be evaluated on content, quality, neatness, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and participation. B. Personal Reflection Papers For assignments that call for a Personal Reflection Paper, students will turn in a one-page, first-person paper that analyzes their experience. The format should be 12-pt, Times New Roman, with one-inch margins, and double- spaced. C. Class Attendance/Participation: Attendance and participation are mandatory and are factored in as a part of the overall final grade. It is necessary that you attend class, since much of this class involves having the benefit of outside speakers sharing their experience and knowledge with you. Attendance will be taken at each class meeting. When meeting in Microsoft Teams, participation includes having your camera and sound unmuted, and participating in the discussions as well as asking questions. Excused absences are those required for UTD sponsored events, requiring the sponsor of the event to provide you with a form to give to your professors prior to the event. M ore than 2 unexcused absences will result in failure of the class. ASSIGNMENTS OVERVIEW- DETAILED DESCRIPTION WILL BE IN TEAMS Assignment 1- Resume and Cover letter (draft creation and final version) Students will prepare a resume and a cover letter. The assignment includes revising and updating your resume and then emailing it to me to review with you. You will make the final adjustments to both documents and then turn in the corrected and updated versions for each document. Assignment 2- LinkedIn/Networking Activity Students will prepare a LinkedIn profile. The assignment includes revising and updating your LinkedIn profile and then reviewing it with me. You will make the final adjustments to it, and identify/connect with 5 alumni and/or professionals on LinkedIn.

Course Syllabus Page 4 Assignment 3- Practice Interview Each student will complete a practice interview using InterviewStream and email it to me to review & discuss with you. You may also participate in a live virtual practice interview with a career consultant in the University Career Center. Assignment 4- Informational Interview Students will conduct one Informational Interview with a professional who works in an area of interest and present a summary to the class about the meetings. Course & Instructor Policies Late Work: Late work will not be accepted . Assignments are due 11:59 pm on the due date. Please note that doing work for other classes does not constitute a valid reason for not completing assignments. Note the due dates for all assignments posted in eLearning.
