2 Childhood Experiences' Impact on Lifelong Development The phrase "As the twig is bent, so grows the tree," coined by Pope Alexander in the 18th century, implies that early influences permanently affect a person's life. Childhood development is a product of both nurture and nature, where social norms, environmental factors, peer and parental influence, and genetics play significant roles (Minh et al., 2017). This means that the experiences a child encounters shape who they become and how they act, making it challenging to alter their personalities once formed. This notion is evident in the life of Andrea Bocelli, a classical musician diagnosed with congenital glaucoma at birth and later lost his vision in a soccer accident at 12. The social cognitive theory and learning theory are two theories that relate to Bocelli's lifespan development. The social cognitive theory recognizes the social origin of human actions and thoughts, while the cognitive part acknowledges the contribution of an individual's thoughts that affect their actions (Beauchamp et al., 2019). Despite his visual impairment, Bocelli's social thoughts propelled him to go beyond his limit to become the most celebrated classical musician. He recognized his disability as not being an inability and was able to tap into his potential as a musician. Bocelli's achievement in music reflects the connection between self-efficacy beliefs and behaviour achievement linked to objective setting. Furthermore, the learning theory applies to Bocelli's lifespan development. The learning theory's human relations and social interaction components are crucial in adult learning (Chuang, 2021). Bocelli's good relationships with others and interactions with mentors in the music industry contributed to his success despite his disability. Additionally, his motivation to pursue music after losing his vision required support from others.
3 "As the twig is bent, so grows the tree" implies that childhood experiences significantly impact an individual's life. Bocelli's life reflects this notion, where his early experiences, self- efficacy beliefs, and social interactions contributed to his success in the music industry. Thus, parents must be mindful of their parenting behaviors and the environment for their children, as these shape the child's future.
