Observational activity Your assignment is to observe a child in a naturalistic setting, e.g. park, playground, backyard, etc., that is not a structured or solitary activity. The child must have other playmates around, though he/she does not have to be continually playing with anyone. The observation must last at least 75 MINUTES . It is important that you do not interact with the child you are observing. If the child attempts to converse, play, etc., gently tell them "I would like to play, talk with you but I must do my schoolwork. When I am finished, I can talk/play with you." You might have to repeat such a statement several times, particularly if you know the child very well. Just be patient and persistent. Once you have selected a child, place and time, review the age appropriate material (ALL RELEVANT CHAPTERS FOR THAT AGE) in the text that describes and discusses the behavior during that developmental period, i.e., early childhood, middle childhood or adolescence. INFANTS, YOUNG TODDLERS CANNOT BE CHOSEN AS SUBJECTS (must be at least 2 years old). ALSO, IF YOU HAVE A CHILD, YOU CAN CHOOSE THEM FOR YOUR OBSERVATION (PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL BIAS OF YOUR CONCLUSIONS). During the observation, sit off to the side and take a running commentary of the child's activities, behaviors and verbalizations. YOU MUST NOT INTERACT WITH THE CHILD YOU ARE OBSERVING!! Describe exactly what you see and hear. Do not edit your data. It is important to be as detailed and specific as possible so that you will have sufficient data to write your paper. This also allows me to assess your conclusions based on the data you have collected. The paper should include the following components: Introduction : Briefly describe your child, including physical characteristics, mannerisms and social competence. Also describe the setting - its geographical and social layout. Include the time you started the observation and when it ended. If you changed venues, please describe each setting. Stage: Discuss the behavior of a typical child similar in age to the one you observed. This information should come from the text. Include information from all RELEVANT chapters and all three DOMAINS. THIS IS NOT A ONE PARAGRAPH SECTION.
Comparison: Compare your child with the information from the stage section of your paper. Was the child similar to the depiction in the course material? Was he/she different? If there were differences - to what degree? Include specific behaviors of your subject to support your conclusions. Be sure to describe those behaviors, eg., when describing gross motor skills, Mulan ran across the playground demonstrating her gross motor skills. Analysis: Discuss possible explanations for your child's behavior and developmental age. Conclusion: Formulate an overall opinion of your child, his/her strengths and weaknesses. What kind of adult do you think they will become and why? Appendix: Attach your observational notes, recorded exactly as you wrote them. This appendix MUST be typed. This paper should also include specific developmental concepts in your paper. All concepts should be BOLDED !! Do not quote large passages from the text. You are to include theoretical concepts and theoretical ideas as well. Format of the papers: The paper must be typed and double spaced. Margins should be standard, i.e., 1 1/2" left and 1" right. They should include a title page, headings for each section and all pages should be numbered. The observation should include the hand written data, (please type your notes), taken while observing your child. Notes must be detailed and a running commentary of everything, including what was said DO NOT SUMMARIZE YOUR NOTES. Papers will not be accepted if they are late. PLEASE BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON THE TITLE PAGE!!
