Mood disorders and suicide Student name Institutional affiliation Professor Course Date
When paired with depression, suicidal thoughts become a more severe indicator of mental health issues. There is an urgent need for increased research on depression due to its widespread prevalence, affecting approximately one in five Americans. Previously, it was believed that bipolar disorder and major depression shared a common origin. Symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia can significantly impact both emotional and physical health. The potential for heightened anxiety is a negative outcome. Rapid and intense mood swings characterize bipolar disorder. In addition to substance misuse, mental health challenges and genetic abnormalities must be considered as potential contributors. Signs of a manic episode include insomnia, an overwhelming need for constant activity, and difficulty focusing. Miller and Black's 2020 research revealed that dissatisfaction was linked to a reduced effort to pursue happiness. Accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder necessitates the ability to differentiate between manic and depressive phases. In individuals with bipolar disorder who have used antidepressants for significant depression, mania tends to occur more frequently (Rowland & Marwaha, 2018).
Treatment for bipolar disorder and severe depression often involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Advances in modern medical technology allow for effective treatment of most illnesses and injuries. The anticonvulsant tranylcypromine has proven helpful in alleviating bipolar disorder symptoms for many individuals. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, suicide is the second leading cause of death globally. References Miller, J. N., & Black, D. W. (2020).
