2 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Depression is currently among the leading mental health disorders that have affected many people in society. What makes mental health disorders dangerous is that other psychiatric and medical illnesses usually accompany them. The evidence-based intervention program that has proven effective in the treatment of depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The intervention involves educating individuals with depression to identify connections between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It teaches them to consider alternative explanations of the situations that are leading to their depressive state (Goodman & Garber, 2017). The intervention helps medical practitioners evaluate the patient's thoughts and perceptions that harm them; the practitioner can then help the patient overcome them. Intervention Effectiveness According to Gautam et al. (2020), much research has been conducted to assess the intervention’s efficacy in treating depressive disorders. A close evaluation of over 110 studies depicted that CPT is an effective and reliable care strategy for individuals suffering from depression. Goodman & Garber (2017) note that a meta-analytic review of CBT study showed that the intervention led to a tremendous reduction of depressive symptoms compared to even anti-depressant medication. The studies show better patient outcomes when practitioners combine pharmacotherapy with CBT in treatment. These studies also showcased that depression patients under CBT treatment are less likely to relapse compared to other treatment methods. It means depression is likely to re-occur among patients after CBT treatment, which is why medical practitioners prefer the intervention (Goodman & Garber, 2017). Care guidelines for depression note that psychological interventions such as CBT are usually the best in tackling depressive disorders in comparison to pharmacotherapy (Gautam et al., 2020).
