Addiction Model A s we focus on the elements of addiction, let us think of it as a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual's life experiences as explained in the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration journal (SAMHSA, 2023). Particularly, alcohol is the most prevalent substance used across the world. Alcoholism impacts people’s lives in many ways. The Personality Model of Addiction helps us understand the basics of alcohol addiction. Based on its concepts, alcoholism is reflected in a person with an addictive personality intertwined with attributes of low self-esteem, inability to cope with stress, lack of impulse control, and feeling powerless (Miller, 2015). S eeking help is an imperative move for everyone impacted by alcohol addiction. Therapy sessions are incorporated in the treatment plans that help all clients irrespective of their cultural diversity to manage stress, acquire new skills, and create a relapse prevention strategy that bolsters recovery. This article explores the therapeutic concepts that foster recovery from addiction, discusses various strategies that are essential in alcoholism management, and expounds on the specifics of addiction. 1
Managing Alcohol Addiction 2
Have you been using alcohol for a lengthy period? Do you experience some or all of the following symptoms? Inability to control consumption despite the feeling of satisfaction, An uncontrolled consistent compulsion for alcohol, Feelings of withdrawal when not in the capacity to afford alcohol, OR Consistent increase in the amount consumable over time? A ccording to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (2023), anyone with the symptoms highlighted is addicted to alcohol use making them vulnerable to it. Impact of Alcoholism B oth short-term and long-term effects are associated with alcoholism on health. Hangover and alcohol poisoning, falls and accidents, conflict, lowered inhibitions and risky behaviors form the greatest short-term effects of alcohol (Grossman et al., 2017). Long- term effects include diseases such as heart disease, breast cancer, liver disease, digestive problems, and stroke among others. Additionally, alcoholism impacts the immune system making a person weaker and more exposed to several diseases (Grossman et al., 2017). Alcoholism also impacts fertility by lowering the sperm count. Additionally, it is associated with creating mistrust in intimate relationships, breaking down relationships, and compounding risks of contracting psychological problems such as alcohol use disorder. partly associated with human lifestyle and partly associated with genetic pressure based on an inherited behavior from previous generations in a genealogy. However, cognitive theories hold that people experience psychological and emotional difficulties when their thinking is out of sync with reality (Neukrug, 2015). On the other hand, behavioral counseling theories hold that people engage in problematic thinking and behavior when their environment supports it (Neukrug, 2015). Based on the two mentioned analogies, reality theory is more practical in dealing with alcoholism treatment. The theory focuses on improving present relationships and circumstances, with less concern and discussion of past events. A lcoholism is associated with poor stress management, inability to overcome phobias, fears, and obsessive behaviors. Using reality therapy concepts to explain the constructs of alcoholism makes it easy to understand the reality associated with the excessive consumption of alcohol despite the imminent consequences anticipated in the long run. Treatment Interventions for Alcoholism P revious studies consider Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) as the most effective therapeutic consideration for alcoholism. According to van Wormer and Davis (2018), DTB is talk therapy for people who experience intense emotions. Based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DTB helps people understand how thoughts affect emotions and behaviors by influencing them to accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping 4
them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors as reflected in alcoholism (Cavicchioli et al., 2020). National Drug and Alcohol Treatment Hotline 1-800- 662-HELP(4357) D ialectical behavior therapy works based on the fact that the conditions dealt with emanate from unhealthy or problematic efforts to control intense, negative emotions. Let us remember that consistent alcohol use was associated with emotional imbalance according to the Personality Model of Addiction. Therefore, the therapists will help us strike a balance between validation of who we are and our challenges and the benefits of change as stipulated by (Kramer et al., 2020). The clinician will teach each client strategies such as core mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation to reduce the struggle with alcoholism. Based on the previous concepts about cognitive and behavioral counseling theories, CBT emerged as a great consideration for identifying negative thoughts and behaviors and replacing them with positive thoughts and behaviors. When used to assist clients overcome their addiction setbacks, CBT focuses on solutions with less emphasis on diagnosis and instead compounds the efforts on constructive actions, such as challenging harmful beliefs, confronting fears, role-playing to improve social interactions, and crafting strategies to stop drinking alcohol as stipulated by Bogenschutz and Forcehimes (2017). CBT initiates recovery in a relatively shorter period hence clients will not have to attend several sessions. American Psychological Association Support Center: 1 (800) 374- 2721 5
A nother treatment strategy integrates motivational interviewing (MI). In a normal setup, we try to reach clients from different backgrounds to allow diversity. When MI is applied to initiate recovery from alcoholism, it infuses the clients with willpower to embrace the best actions such as overcoming ambivalence, setting direct goals for self-improvement, and staying motivated to realize them in the long run (Bogenschutz & Forcehimes, (2017). In a nutshell, motivational interviewing aims to help clients develop self-efficacy, express empathy, and develop discrepancies in their road to recovery. M oreover, the 12-Step Facilitation will bolster other strategies. The program is Alcoholics Anonymous which embraces group therapy concepts to bring different clients together to share their experiences and benefit from recovery ideas from members of the group (Bogenschutz & Forcehimes, (2017). The therapist facilitates the group sessions as much as the clients center the progress of all activities undertaken in the 12-step program. L astly, clients will also be exposed to other techniques such as yoga, meditation, art, and music to help manage cravings and instead stay focused on the recovery plans. The mentioned techniques also help in relaxing the body and the mind for better therapeutic outcomes in the long run. the various intervention strategies. However, the article narrows down to the demographics of adult African Americans and Asians. According to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (2023), at least 7.4% and 4.6% of African Americans and Asians are affected by alcoholism, respectively. Cultural and Ethnic Diversity F ocusing on diversity, alcoholism has different cultural perspectives in the two communities, African Americans and Asians. Various brief family interventions are designed by different local communities in managing alcohol consumption because excessive use compromises cultural morals such as causing domestic violence, family breakages, child abuse, and poor work ethic in both populations (McCance- Katz, 2018). The African American culture is characterized by norms that prohibit heavy alcohol use as much as data indicates that they are more exposed to alcohol dependency than their Asian counterparts. It is imperative to note that the populations of Asian descent are more sensitive to alcohol because the usage leads to runny noses, borderline-instantaneous headaches, flushed skin, and abdominal pain due to their genetic makeup populations (McCance-Katz, 2018). values. Stigma is a significant issue. Stigma is a pervasive barrier to optimal care in the community (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2023). The negative beliefs compromise the community’s otherwise set of good norms that uphold accepted morals and behavioral standards in the long run. Spouse abuse is also another legal constraint. Alcoholics bridge such rights when they engage in domestic violence and intimacy exploitation. Parents' rights versus child’s rights is also a serious legal and ethical issue when debating alcoholism. Alcoholic parents face the challenge of consenting to counseling services granted to their children because they are also compromised. The issue of informed consent is imperative in upholding a perfect help program for clients below the majority age (SAMHSA, 2023). Generally, violent crimes and aggression against others are common legal issues that impact the community because of alcoholism.
