2 Fowler's Primal Faith Stage A close connection exists between Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory and James Fowler's Primal faith stage, corresponding to infancy when examining this developmental phase. Fowler's Undifferentiated Faith and Erikson's first stage, Trust vs. Mistrust, are similar. Fowler highlights how crucial it is for infants to learn essential reciprocity and trust since this lays the groundwork for later religious growth. Erikson emphasizes the significance of a child's early experiences in developing a sense of confidence in the outside world in a similar manner. Both theories emphasize how meaningful caregiver interactions are in forming a person's fundamental perspective, whether that perspective is undifferentiated faith or essential trust. Going beyond Erikson, Fowler's investigation of early childhood's Stage 1: Intuitive- Projective Faith can be connected to Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development. According to Fowler, a child's imagination is developing now, and they have trouble telling the difference between reality and fantasy. Early childhood is correlated with Piaget's preoperational stage, which stresses symbolic thinking and the absence of concrete operational reasoning. According to the congruence of Fowler and Piaget's theories, a child's ability to understand symbols helps shape their perceptions of faith throughout these formative years, where cognitive and belief development interact (Berk, 2023). Furthermore, there is an overlap with Lawrence Kohlberg's stages of moral development when considering Fowler's latter stages, especially Stage 4: Individual-Reflective Faith. Fowler's idea of a religion becoming explicit and the individual assuming responsibility for studying and understanding their views is consistent with Kohlberg's emphasis on developing personal moral values and the capacity for reflection (Timm et al., 2022). Both theories show a trend toward more internalization and introspection, suggesting that moral and religious development are woven together throughout a person's lifetime.
