Report
Digging into Sheboygan County’s Heroin Epidemic The opioid crisis in the United States has been a major concern for the government and community-based organizations. While most of these organizations are dealing with opioids, other non-opioid drugs are also creeping in and killing thousands of people annually. Specifically, Sheboygan has been struggling with heroin for years. The streets of the county have been marred with an increased use of the drug, and many families have had challenges dealing with it. Sheboygan County Sheriff Todd Priebe examines the heroine problem in the county through a personal point of view. He offers his own experiences and observations during the first Lakeland University ThinkHaus talk of the 2016-17 academic year that was held on September 15. in the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s theater. Sheriff Todd Priebe takes an unorthodox approach with his talk on the Sheboygan heroin problem by talking about his struggle with drug addiction. By reiterating his experiences, Priebe expects the audience to see how just anyone can become a victim of drug and substance abuse without even realizing it. In this case, he talks about the events that transpired after getting knee replacement surgeries. To deal with the pain, the doctor prescribed Priebe Tramadol since he had previously had negative reactions to opioids. However, the sheriff got a stimulating response from Tramadol, which led him to crush his physiotherapy and get back to normalcy shortly after the surgeries (Priebe, 2016). Unfortunately, he had been hooked on Tramadol and struggled to wean himself out of the drug since he now relied on it to feel normal. Priebe also notes that he is not the only one who has suffered such an addiction after having seen his wife come close to an oxytocin addiction. In addition, the Sherriff explores how heroine has gradually become a menace in the community and how easy it is for people to use it. In this case, Priebe notes that heroin has risen
in popularity as a replacement for opioids. Typically, opioids cost about $20 for 20 grams, which is about a dollar a gram. Such pricing is high. On the other hand, a couple of dollars can get people a significant amount of heroin. As a result, it has become a common drug. In addition, it has become easy for people to get back into using heroin even after being in recovery due to the need to feel “good” or “normal” (Priebe, 2016). Priebe also notes the various issues that have caused the increase in heroin use and overdoses. Primarily, he notes the stress on teenagers, which has caused them to indulge in substance abuse. There are a lot of expectations for children and teenagers at home and school. These kids become stressed and look for ways to cope through the use of different substances. In addition, physical pain is a major predisposing factor to heroin abuse. People who have suffered injuries or had surgeries and had to deal with pain are likely to abuse heroin, among other drugs. Heroine is the cheaper option available since opioids are no longer readily available or easily prescribed. I agree with Sherriff Todd Priebe’s views about the heroine menace in Sheboygan. Although Sheboygan is a small town, heroin prevalence has been high. Many families have experiences similar to that of the sheriff, where one or more members have struggled with addiction to various substances.
