Main Argument: The main argument of this chapter is that the Black struggle for freedom and equality in the United States has been ongoing for centuries, and although progress has been made in some areas, systemic racism and economic inequality continue to oppress Black Americans. Main Ideas: On April 12, 1865, the American Civil War officially came to an end when the Union Army, led by 200,000 Black soldiers, destroyed the institution of slavery. Black people were now to be no longer property but citizens of the United States (pg.193),The gap between formal equality before the law and the right to make decisions about your life is the essence of freedom (pg.), Liberals and radicals often converged in the demand that Blacks should have greater political control over their communities (pg.197), Many Black revolutionaries took for granted that African Americans were a colonized population within the United States (pg.202), Organizations like the Black Panthers, which called for the overthrow of the government, were so popular that the FBI director declared them the greatest threat to internal security of the country (pg.207), By the early 1940s, thousands of Blacks had joined the CP, and the politics of communism became the dominant political framework for most of the nonwhite world (pg.209), The Black movement is an independent force with its own timing, logic, and perspective based on the history of racism and oppression in the United States (pg.211), Karl Marx recognized that slavery was central to the world economy and that without slavery North America would be transformed into a patriarchal country (pg.212), Marxist theory of racism explains how capitalism promotes economic competition between workers, how the ruling class uses racist ideology to divide workers against each other, and how oppression of one group of workers negatively affects all workers (pg.216), Barack Obama has received many racial slurs and racist invective, but he has also championed policies that absolved banks and Wall Street of any responsibility for crashing the economy (pg.218) Interesting Facts: Malcolm X described the "American nightmare" of economic inequality and unchecked injustice that Black people were freed into (pg.194), In the last fifty years, there have been many measures of Black accomplishment and achievement in a country where Black people were never intended to survive as free people. Yet, at the same time, there has been a new period of Black protest, Black radicalization, and the birth of a new Black left (pg.199), Although some African Americans have achieved success, 4 million Black children live in poverty, 1 million Black people are incarcerated, and 240,000 Black people lost their homes in the foreclosure crisis (pg.204), Martin Luther King wrote that the Black struggle revealed systemic rather than superficial flaws and that the "radical reconstruction of society itself is the real issue to be faced." (pg.207), The oppression of Black workers exposes the foundational lie of the United States as a free and democratic society (pg.209), More than 19 million white Americans fall below the poverty line, nearly double the number of poor Black people.
