Main argument: The main argument of the text is that the Black Power movement of the 1960s brought hope and raised expectations among African Americans, but ultimately fell short in achieving their goals. Main Ideas: The Black Power insurgency of the 1960s didn't return Blacks to a state of neo-slavery, but the hope and expectations raised by the movement proved elusive (pg.52), The politics of colorblindness helped to shroud racism and the economic crisis of the early 1970s (pg.56), The Black movement was losing momentum as political factions pulled it in different directions, The Black movement was a threat to the racial status quo and a catalyst for many other mobilizations against oppression. (pg.58), The reassertion of Republican control began with binding the loose threads of the party, and winning white Democrats on the basis of racism. In March 1970, more than 200,000 postal workers went on strike, demanding a pay increase. (pg 59), The 1968 labor strike wave involved the largest number of Black workers ever in a U.S. labor dispute, and white workers played a prominent role in it. Nixon and his first term as U.S. president (pg.62), Nixon's emphasis on "mobility" and "the ability to choose" ignored the heated ongoing debates over the 1968 Fair Housing Act and instead focused on the disparities between Blacks and the rest of American society. (pg.65), Nixon's declaration of the end of the urban crisis was a way to isolate poor, urban Blacks and to begin ideologically undoing the postwar welfare state. (pg 68) Interesting Facts: After the "Black revolution" of the 1960s, politicians no longer felt comfortable displaying their racist credentials upon their sleeves. (pg.52), In 1981, Republican Party strategist Lee Atwater explained how colorblind politics could be used to roll back the civil rights movement. (pg.57), Nixon referred to the silent majority as a vocal minority, and argued that elections are won by focusing on people's resentments. (pg.60), The long economic expansion of the postwar period was capped by rising crime, rising taxes and inflation. (pg.62), Hundreds of thousands of African Americans participated in social-movement activism over the course of the 1960s, and their struggles at work catalyzed government action that created a Black middle class. In the late 1960s, the elite were worried about the rising fortunes of the left, and wondered how such an idea could be mobilized in this country.(pg 65), Johnson's Omnibus Crime and Safe Streets Act of 1968 was passed in the weeks after the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. (pg.68), Colorblindness is the default setting for how Americans understand how race and racism work (pg. 70)
