Go to “Court Role and Structure” then comparing federal and state courts. - How are federal judges selected ? federal judges are to be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. - How are state judges selected? election, appointment for a given number of years, appointment for life,combinations of these methods, e.g., appointment followed by election. -What types of cases do federal courts hear? (2) Cases that deal with the constitutionality of a law, Cases involving ambassadors and public ministers. What types of cases do state courts hear? (2) Most criminal cases, probate (involving wills and estates), Most contract cases, tort cases (personal injuries), family law (marriages, divorces, adoptions), etc. 3. Criminal law encompasses murder, theft, assault, or any other criminal activity that affects society, whereas civil law seeks compensation for offenses against an individual or an organization. - 4. Wainwright (1963) - Gideon as an indigent requested an attorney for free from the charge after being accused of a felony but the judge denied his request.
