CW Six- 1. Ramsay feels that the power to amend the Constitution is so important for political innovation since no other country has allowed it before and it’s a step towards less oppression. 2. Wintrhop believes that a Bill of Rights is essential in the Constitution as to protect minorities from a larger majority in a republic. 3. Ramsay believes that the whole country should be governed by the same laws differing from Winthrop’s idea that one of the reasons freedoms in America was preserved was because the states have the right to be self-governed it it would be impossible for all of the states to be ruled under numerous agreed-upon laws. HW Six- 1. The only powers granted by the Articles of Confederation were things like declaring war, foreign affairs, or making treaties. The states were unified by a "firm league of friendship," and each state had one vote in Congress, no matter the size, to ensure that the larger states did not infringe on the rights or wishes of the smaller states. 2. The Articles of Confederation played a minor role in the expansion; however, the main reason was farmers would have more land access, even though some of the land was protected for Indians. Thanks to the land ordinances, it was easy to buy fair, undisputed land, and these new settlers eventually received statehood. 3. They would force Native Americans to move westward, die off, or assimilate into white “civilization.” The Native Americans would have their land taken from them, encouraging them to fight. 4. Congress was in serious debt after the war but lacked the power to impose taxes to raise revenue, and states had to take matters into their own hands, which seemed to divide them rather than unite them. In 1786 and 1787, a group of farmers in West Massachusetts lost their land because they could not pay taxes and revolted in what is known as Shays’ Rebellion. Though the rebellion wasn't successful, it highlighted the importance of property and individual rights, which could be tampered with. No one seemed to respect the federal government. 5. It was a bundle of compromises because it is essentially federalist beliefs with exceptions and influences from anti-federalists' beliefs, compromise with anti- federalists, bill of rights (1-10 amendments), the executive branch was split into three branches (judicial, executive, legislative); the creation of a bicameral legislature was known as a great compromise of the constitution. Another compromise which shaped the direction of the nation was that slavery could not be abolished by congress for 20 years. 6. The Federalists supported the right to tax the country, the ratification of the constitution and they supported a strong central government.
