CHAPTER 2 DISCUSSIONS & CASE STUDY 2A Discuss the contemporary ethical dilemmas related to death with dignity. Explain the ethical issue regarding Death with Dignity, and how is it intertwined with Organ Donations? The ethical issues regarding Death with Dignity is that there are people who doesn’t agree due to moral and religious standpoint, claiming that it is morally wrong to take ones own life regardless of the law. Whoever, Organ Donation, a person is still living when the organs are being harvested, so a person choosing organ donation as a way to end their life, is also choosing to die. So if one law is acceptable, the other one should also be acceptable. Describe 2 historical events setting precedence. The "Kevorkian Illegally Assists Terminally Ill Patients in Suicide", where Dr. Jack Kevorkian assisted terminally ill patients in suicide outside the boundaries of law. Using a suicide machine to assist a 54 year old woman with Alzheimer’s as per request. And “Timothy Quill and Prescription for Death”, Timothy published an article describing how he had prescribe a lethal dose of sedatives to end the life of a young woman who suffered from Leukemia. Discuss 2 states allowing assisted suicide mentioned by Pozgar. Oregon and Washington. 2B Discuss the contemporary ethical dilemmas related to cloning. Explain the ethical issue regarding cloning? The ethical issues include the safety and efficacy of the procedure, cloning for destructive embryonic stem cell research, the effects of reproductive cloning on the child/ parent relationship, and the commodification of human life as a research product. Describe the dilemma with Dolly the Sheep who was cloned. Even though Dolly the Sheep was a successful cloning, and it was a huge step forward in science, there were 276 fail attempts before Dolly. Also, there were some questions that scientists were still looking for answers to, for example, they were not sure if Dolly was aging prematurely, because she was cloned from a 6-year-old sheep. Evidence that that was happening wasn’t clear just by looking into her DNA. So even though Dolly was successful, it wasn’t perfect. Describe the Human Genome Project and why it is an ethical issue. The Human Genome Project is a very powerful tool, beneficial to cure genetic weaknesses and tendencies. But this tool at our disposal is the potential for abuse. For example, people choosing desirable traits.
CHAPTER 2 DISCUSSIONS & CASE STUDY 3B Describe the law and morality of Abortion. Explain the conflicting beliefs about abortion? Pro-life advocates argue on constitutional, ethical, and religious grounds that the unborn child has a right to life, and that right must be protected. Pro-choice advocates argue that a woman has a right to choose preservation and protection of her health, and therefore, in many cases, her life is at least as compelling as the state’s interest in promoting childbirth. Explain the circumstances that would change your opinion about abortion – i.e., rape, incest, …? Rape, incest, difficult pregnancy (if the mom’s life is in danger because of any disease or complication), and if the child is known to be born with a defect that can be a burden for the child and it’s quality of life, those are reasons I believe abortion to be acceptable. Chapter 2 Case Study Watch this video regarding the ethical dilemma of designer babies with Paul Knopefler. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOHbn8Q1fBM Answer the following questions: 3 full paragraphs are expected Explain the ethical dilemma that is brought to question with designer babies? The dilemma is that Genetic Modification is brought to help with diseases, weaknesses, and tendencies. Whoever, people are gritty, they like to push forward to extreme, and if genetic modification is allowed, people will start changing the baby’s trait, for example, the color of their eye, hair, etc. And even if you don’t choose that for your baby, how would that make you feel if the majority does, and your kid grows up surrounded by designer babies, and your kid will be the “ugly duck” among them all? Describe your thoughts about designer babies with London allowing human genetic modification? Designer babies are wrong in my opinion. We would be creating an artificial population that can go very wrong in the end. I would consider if there was a way to guarantee that modification would only be used on the sole purpose to cure, stop or avoid diseases. Explain the technology which is now available to help create designer babies? CRISPR edits genes by precisely cutting DNA and then letting natural DNA repair processes to take over. The system consists of two
CHAPTER 2 DISCUSSIONS & CASE STUDY parts: the Cas9 enzyme and a guide RNA. Rapidly translating revolutionary technology into transformative therapies. When the target DNA is found, Cas9 – one of the enzymes produced by the CRISPR system – binds to the DNA and cuts it, shutting the targeted gene off.
