1. Which weekly objectives do you have prior knowledge of and to what extent? 2. Which weekly objectives do you have no prior knowledge of? 3. What course-related topics would you like to discuss with your instructor and classmates? What questions or concerns do you have about this course? Hi classmates, While reviewing our weekly objectives, I recalled the topic of neurotransmitters and addiction from a previous class. I have always found it interesting how our brain chemistry can significantly impact our behavior. However, I do not have prior knowledge of how specific drugs affect individuals and society. I think it will also be very interesting to discuss with the class the dangers of over-the-counter drug use, which is often overlooked. I am extremely excited for this class and to discuss all of our weekly objectives with classmates. At the moment, I do not have questions regarding the course. Thank you :) DQ 1 There have been many legislative attempts at controlling the use of illicit drugs (whether prescription-type or otherwise). Why, or why not, have these attempts been effective? In your response, consider the root causes of illicit drug use. All the legislative attempts at controlling the use of illicit drugs have had mixed results. While some measures have been successful in reducing drug use in some populations, others have not been as effective. The root causes of illicit drug use are varied and complex, and legislative measures alone may not be enough to address them. Factors such as poverty, lack of education, mental health issues, and social isolation can all contribute to drug use. Therefore, a more comprehensive approach that includes education, prevention, and treatment may be needed to effectively address the issue of illicit drug use. According to Gerstein and Green, legislative attempts to control illicit drug use can take many forms (1993). Some include criminalizing drug possession and distribution, importing mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses, and regulating the prescribing and dispensing of prescription drugs. However, the effectiveness of these legislative measures can vary depending on a variety of factors. Gerstein, D. R., & Green, L. W. (1993). Preventing drug abuse: What do we know? DQ2 Identify a national societal drug or alcohol issue. What are some of the social problems you have observed due to substance use-related issues? How does this issue impact society and what problems are manifesting as a result? What programs or resources are available? Alcohol use is a substance that has once been banned and restricted by society due to the increase in violence, family issues, and political corruption. While prohibition has not been in effect since 1933, there is still a rising incidence of DUIs, car accidents, and violence attributed to alcohol abuse, indicating that the issues persist despite the absence of prohibition. Moss asserts that alcohol remains the most widely consumed drug globally, and its legal status makes an increasing number of individuals vulnerable to its abuse (2013). There are several programs and resources available to address the issue of alcohol abuse and its impact on society. These include Alcoholics Anonymous, a 12-step program designed to help individuals struggling with alcohol addiction. Additionally, there are various rehabilitation centers and treatment options available to those seeking help with their addiction. Some examples are inpatient and outpatient treatment, and individual and group counseling. Education and prevention programs are also available to promote responsible alcohol use and reduce the incidence of alcohol-related issues. Understanding the root causes of substance abuse and the impact it has on individuals and society is critical in developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. Moss, H. (2013). Schmoke (1990), which I found interesting, where Schmoke states an argument in favor of decriminalization is that it would shift the focus from punishment to treatment, ultimately reducing the harm caused by drug addiction. Schmoke argues that the current criminal justice system is not equipped to effectively address drug addiction and that decriminalization would allow for a more public health-oriented approach. He also notes that the criminalization of drug use disproportionately affects communities of color and perpetuates systemic racism. Schmoke believes that decriminalization would help to reduce these disparities and promote a more just and equitable society. Thank you :)

It is alarming to learn that 80% of incarcerated individuals have used drugs at some point in their lives, which highlights the need for effective prevention and treatment programs. I appreciate your insight on the importance of individual responsibility and willpower in overcoming addiction, as well as the value of peer support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. It is inspiring to hear how you have found strength and support through your faith and participation in AA. I wish you all the best in your work with the Department of Corrections and your continued efforts to help those struggling with addiction. Thank you :) 3: Hi Sophia, Thank you for sharing your insights regarding the opioid crisis in the United States. It is always alarming to hear about the increase in drug overdose deaths and the impact it is having on individuals, families, and communities. However, it's great to hear that there are resources available for those who suffer from opioid addiction, such as detox facilities, rehabilitation centers, and hospitals. It's important to continue raising awareness about the issue and the resources available for help and treatment. It's also very important to recognize the impact of substance abuse on individuals and society and to support and promote resources and programs that aim to prevent and treat addiction. Thank you :)
