After reviewing “Putting Clients Ahead of Personal Values,” I agree that school counselors need
to put their own personal beliefs aside and prioritize the care of the client. In the Eastern
Michigan University case, a counseling EMU student was dismissed from the counseling
program after refusing, on her religious grounds, to counsel a homosexual client. The judge on
the case adhered to the university's reasonable requirement for all counseling students to be able
to serve homosexual clients (Rollins, 2022). After reading the article I felt pretty content that the
requirements are to serve any client regardless of their background and who they identify as. As
counselors we need to become comfortable with the idea that we will come across clients with
different cultures, beliefs, and values than our own. It is part of our ethical responsibility to serve
clients and treat them with care and put our own personal values, beliefs aside. This requirement
is in conjunction with the ACA Code of Ethics 2014,
C.5. Nondiscrimination,
which states that
counselors do not condone or engage in any type of discrimination against clients based on age,
culture, disability, ethnicity, race, religion, gender or identity, sexual orientation, marital/
partnership status, language preference, socioeconomic status, immigration status, or any basis
proscribed by law (American Counseling Association, 2014).

Hi,
I enjoyed reading your well thought out discussion! The EMU case also made me aware of how
important it will be for counselors to set personal values and beliefs aside when it comes to
counseling services. I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading this case because I learned so much
of what will be expected from me as a counseling student in training and future counselor. As
you mentioned, now is the time for us to start preparing ourselves to face clients of various
cultures and backgrounds! What steps do you think you’ll take to expand your knowledge on this
topic?
