After reading through "Issues & Ethics in the helping professions," I learned the differences between values, ethics, and laws. Values are based on personal life experiences that may influence how we go about making decisions in our roles (Corey et al., 2019). As counselors, we need to understand that our own values may interfere with our work with or without knowing. Therefore, it is important to learn how to manage and respect the values of clients even if those values are different from our own. The Code of Ethics are guidelines established by a professional organization for employees and members to follow. Following the guidelines provided will ensure ethical and moral behavior. However, ethical codes can not be used mechanically because each situation is different and personal judgment is demanded (Corey et al., 2019). While ethics relates to the qualities that determine the conduct of professional members; law is the core of principles that determine the responsibility of people within a community, state, or country (Corey et al., 2019). The counseling profession consists of building a professional relationship that enables individuals, families, or groups from various backgrounds to achieve their desired education and career goals as well as achieving mental health and wellness (ACA, 2014). It is crucial to have professional values to be able to remain ethical and abide by ethical commitment. The ACA Code of Ethics (American Counseling Association, 2014) outlines the core professional values of the counseling profession as well as the fundamental ethical principles. As a school counselor, I will abide by these ethical standards to be able to remain ethical with my behavior as well as my decision making throughout my profession. American Counseling Association. Issues & Ethics in the Helping Professions: The Ethics of Imposing Your Values on Clients. Retrieved December 17, 2022 I love that you mentioned that as school counselors we must protect our clients and help them feel safe because I completely agree. Providing a safe place for students is an overall primary goal and it will go a long way. As school counselors, we should always promote safety for our students' well being so they can have a safe place to learn. As mentioned in the ACA Code of Ethics under client welfare, a counselors foremost responsibility is to respect and promote dignity and the well being of clients, keep documentation in a safe place to be able to provide the appropriate services, provide counseling plans that provide promising success, as well as networking for positive resources and support from others. Having these codes of ethics will help and guide us into becoming successful professional school counselors. I am eager to learn more about ethics because after reading through some of them I can see how they are all important and provide information that will help us remain ethical throughout our profession. Hello Sonya, According to the American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics under the code A.4. Avoiding Harm and Imposing Values, section A.4.b Personal Values states that counselors should be aware and refrain from forcing their own values, beliefs and or behaviors onto clients especially when they differ from the clients own personal beliefs/goals. To avoid unethical behavior counselors should seek help or training in areas in which they believe there is a possibility of them acting unethically in their profession.
