Summary In the article, What Differentiated Instruction Really Means, the author discussed four main components of differentiated instruction. The first component is for educators to focus on the growth students have shown instead of the loss of learning. The author suggests that educators can get through this loss learning by providing students with clear goals of what learning looks like and focusing on successful criteria and formative assessments (Westman, 2021). The second component is for educators to offer empathy and not interventions. The author is not asking educators to stop interventions, but to create lessons that provide students with the opportunity of practice at their level and exposes them to grade-level content (Westman, 2021). Making instruction equitable and not equal for students is the third component the author talks about in the article. To make instruction equitable, educators can work with students in smaller group to reteach a previously taught skill, while the others are working on their current learning objective. Educators assuming positive intent is the fourth component of this article. Educators should be compassionate in their responses towards their students. When students experience shame, it can hinder their ability to learn. Educators should always approach any teaching moment with compassion. The author wants educators to focus more on growth for both the students and themselves instead of the fear what is going to happen if their students don’t meet their learning goals. Comparison For my comparison section, I chose a lesson from the Library of Congress, How Transportation Transformed America: Going to the Market, created by Jane Hoover and Linda C. Joseph. The author from the article used for this week’s learning material wants educators to find ways to differentiate instruction so that all student needs are met. When comparing the two,
it is noticed that the lesson plan included opportunities for differentiation by having visual images, detailed lists, time frame to complete the project, additional resources, and clear goal statements for each activity. In this lesson plan, the creators made sure told include opportunity for educators to assume positive intent why students completed activity four. Providing these types of differentiation tools can help meet the needs of students. Contrast In contrast, the article focuses more on explaining what differentiation means instead of tools to use in the classroom. This lesson plan does lack differentiated levels of readiness for the students who are reading below grade level. The lesson plan should include a variation of ways to complete the project, instead of just sticking with the students creating a folder. The lesson plan could include opportunities for students to use technology by creating a video, PowerPoint presentation, or even a podcast to go along with the project. This lesson plan could also provide students with question prompts to help them formulate questions for further investigation.
