Article Review: Validity and Reliability Resources Tiana Butler Liberty University EDU 671 Dr. Jamaul Kennedy 2/11/24
Article Analysis In the article, Principles and Purposes of Assessment in the Classroom, the author discusses how educators are using assessment information to make decisions in the classroom at a constant rate (Earle, 2021). Educators probably do not see it, but these constant decisions while using assessment information allows them to collect data about their students’ learning progress and make the necessary changes. Sarah Earle (2021) points out three different ways of how influential assessments are. Assessments can influence the culture in the classroom and school, make an impact on student and teacher ideas, and also determine what standards are taught and how educators will teach them (Earle, 2021). Sarah Earle (2021) also points out the effective use of assessments can help educators identify if their students are succeeding or if the students require more support from the teachers. The author focuses on the use of assessment by taking a look at both formative and summative assessments’ purpose, and discussing the principles of validity and reliability to provide guidance during the decision-making process. In agreeance with the author, it is important that educators understand the purpose and principle of assessments. Educators are constantly making decisions on how to relay information to the students, what tasks would be beneficial, and how to deal with if they made the right decisions or not. With the understanding of the purposes and principles of assessment, educators can use this information to create significant and effective assessments in their classrooms. Topic Analysis In the article, the author examines how the principles of validity and reliability can be useful when making decisions about what assessment tasks the students should do or what
information educators need to gather (Earle, 2021). Educators can identify if an assessment is valid or not by its purpose and if it actually can assess their students’ learning. When testing the reliability of an assessment, educators should be able to trust in the accuracy or consistency of it (Earle, 2021). The article also points out how validity and reliability may contradict each other. The author discusses how reliability requires the task to be narrowed down to ensure marker agreement and validity requires a more open approach to the subject. As educators determine the purpose of the assessment, they are able to find a balance between validity and reliability. Personal Reflection After reading the learning materials for this week’s module, I understand how important validity and reliability are in the classroom. I am more aware of both validity and reliability when creating and using assessments in my classroom because of my knowledge. To identify the validity in my assessments, I can ensure that they measure with purpose, align with real-world tasks, and collect data multiple ways. When ensuring that my assessments produce reliable results, I can provide clear and consistent directions for my students, use a scoring rubric to ensure grading consistency, and choose the best testing option for my students. By incorporating these methods to ensure the validity and reliability of my assessments in my classroom, my assessments will produce meaningful results for my students and myself.
