Response: This week I was able to learn that the gifts of the Spirit, according to the teaching of Elder Robert D. Hales,
are gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit, and each of us in this life receives at least one. We must seek and develop
these gifts, not only for our benefit but also to share them with others, especially we must seek and develop the gift
of charity, which is the pure love of Christ. Charity, according to Elder Hales, should be used to make life more
meaningful to others, guiding and strengthening both the spiritual and temporal lives of people, especially in difficult
times. We must also see the importance of striving to be the best we can be in this life as taught in Moroni 10:30–33.
Despite doing everything we can, we must understand that only through the grace of Christ can we be saved. This
intervention of Christ's grace comes after we do our best. We must also keep in mind that regardless of our actions,
they will be meaningless if we do not develop the gift of charity in our lives as we are taught in 1 Corinthians 13. Here
Paul emphasizes that charity is the greatest of all gifts. and that without it, our actions will have no value.
Word Count:219 4. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.
5.
The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
Violence
Response:
Thank you for sharing with me this difficulty you are going through. This week I read a speech by Elder Hales where
he highlights the importance of seeking and developing the gifts of the Spirit, specifically emphasizing the gift of
charity. This gift can be a fundamental tool in changing your life and focus. Charity is defined as the pure love of
Christ, and this implies having compassion, understanding, and empathy towards any person. By practicing charity,
you can learn to manage anger and aggression, opting instead for compassionate and loving responses. We must, as
Moroni 10:30–33 says, remember that we must strive to give our best in this life, but it is also emphasized that only
through the grace of Christ can we be saved. This should be a reminder and a force for you to strive to change and
improve, you must recognize that there is hope and divine help available, meaning that you are not alone. Knowing
this can be an exclusive motivation for you so you can seek personal improvement and work on controlling your
impulses and emotions. Before everything you do, you must remember Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 13, where he
highlights the importance of charity, indicating that without it, our actions, no matter what they are, are worthless.
This can be a call to reflect on the true intention of your actions, as it will help you be better prepared and be able to
identify what things you are doing with true intention. To obtain charity, you must renounce the selfishness that we
as people of the world often have and focus on the well-being of others no matter who they are. By applying this
principle, you can learn to be more positive and less negative and violent towards others, so you will look for ways to
help and support others instead of resorting to violence. Word Count: 314
