Charity, foreign aid, and social welfare programs are a means to an end . What do you suppose the end goal is that these programs are trying to achieve? Is there a better means or method to achieve this end ? The end goals that these programs are trying to achieve is to try to get people out of poverty and for them to maintain good health. As stated in the video many people or most people are just taking the hand-outs and are not trying to better themselves, they just keep on waiting for someone to give them the things that they need for free. I know that in order to be eligible for food assistance in Michigan now you have at least been working so many hours or show proof that you have applied for so many jobs. I think that these are better methods instead of just giving it to people and they won’t ever try to find a job we should make them work for it. In Stossel’s Freeloaders segment, shelter operator Bob Coté practices “tough love” and suggests that the “misdirected compassion” of churches and charities actually end up hurting those who they are trying to help by enabling their destructive behaviors. Do you agree or disagree? Can you think of a real-life example of “misdirected compassion” or guilt-driven charitable giving? I agree that churches and charities actually end up hurting those who they are trying to help by enabling their destructive behaviors. I agree with this because even in the video clip they showed numerous examples of people being offered a job and was given money but never showed up to the job. Some took the money and went and bought alcohol and drugs to support their habits and then went back on the streets to hold up their sign. I think that Bob using the ‘tough love’ approach is actually helping the homeless in a good way. A “moral-hazard” is where someone is given an incentive to do something that is destructive to the overall well-being of themselves or others (ex: rewarding failure or penalizing success). In your opinion, how might aid programs create moral-hazards for those who “benefit” from them? I feel like most aid programs create moral-hazards for those who benefit from them in many ways. Many of the aid programs require for you to have kids or must be expecting a baby in order to receive help. This is encouraging young girls to go out in have children just to receive help which is not right. Someone who don’t have children should receive the same amount of help. As human beings, we have both material and psychological needs (or spiritual needs) that are met through having to work. Agree or disagree with this statement "handouts undermine the dignity of
the recipient, since the self-respect that comes from earning a living is taken away." I agree and disagree with this statement because handouts are not always a bad thing. They can help people with the small things to get back on their feet. But to many handouts will cause people to only rely on handouts and they aren’t willing to put in the extra work for themselves anymore. When they aren’t taking handouts, they will feel more accomplished when they work for what they have. Do people who work in the “aid industry” have good intentions or are they corrupt? What are the implications? I feel like sometimes the people in the aid industry has good intentions but then I also feel like they don’t. I say this because yes, they are helping some of those in need, but many people take it for granted. People are doing less because they are receiving more free help repeatedly. This causes them to be stricter when it comes to new people applying. Hello, I think that you did a great job answering each question with and provided great details. I also agree with your statement that the aid industry makes a lot of promises and not many people are actually being helped. These programs deny a lot of people who actually struggling every day and they make it hard for people to get approved. Hello, I agreed with a lot of your responses. I strongly agreed with the last question about handouts. Many people take handouts for granted and they become dependent on others rather than finding a job to better themselves.
