1. What did you know about this topic prior to reading the assigned readings? Before reading I did not know much about what ethics was other than it had something to do with morals and how we live our lives. 2. What else do you want to know about this topic? I would like to learn more about the three approaches to moral thinking as well as the Benefits Without Harm principle. I would also like to learn more about how others think on topics and what they think is morally correct. 3. What did you learn about this topic after reading this? After reading I learned that moral philosophy and ethics are the critical examination of questions that lead to assumptions and theoretical commitments. Also, that ethics is exploring rules that regulate our social lives. I was also introduced to the three types of moral thinking such as using a scientist-like approach, “descriptive ethics” and taking a step back (meta-ethics). 4. What was your takeaway from the reading? The most important topic I learned from the reading was that the “false starts”, that the law, opinion polls and one's conscience are not reliable for what is right. I found this to be the most interesting because I began thinking of examples in the justice system. My first thought was those who date or marry people of a larger age. Say an 18 year old marries a 65 year old, to me this is morally incorrect but within the justice system there is no law against this. I also thought about baby Theresa, the BWHP says that if an action benefits without harm that it is ethically correct. I thought about this for a while as the reading states that killing baby Theresa is ethically correct because it does not harm anyone, but my thought is that baby Theresa is someone and therefore would not be ethically correct. I feel there are two different ways that this situation can be perceived and my question at that point was, “Who is considered anyone in this situation”. 5. What was your takeaway from the lecture? After viewing both lectures I first enjoyed seeing how socratic notes can be taken in the best way. I had already done most of my notes before viewing this lecture but it was helpful to see more of what I should be doing with this information. I also learned more about meta-ethics, descriptive approach and normative ethics and how they are applied to ethics. 6. Pick a few important concepts to apply and explain how you could apply them. The different forms of ethical arguments was one of the most important concepts in the lecture. You can evaluate ethical principles, look at arguments from analogies and then evaluate them. After evaluating analogies you infer what is the best ethically and then evaluate arguments once again. I can apply this to my life by forming my own truths instead of using opinions or morals I have been taught in the past. This does not mean completely putting aside all morals or what I know but allowing myself to find my own truths.
