PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 1 Personal Theory Paper Uniqua K. Evans Liberty University
PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 2 Summary In this assignment, the reader will be able to identify my research that I have gathered on my goals in spiritual counselling and modeling theories as to how I would integrate them. Additionally, they will also see how I have found several methodologies that would provide its effectiveness towards integrating psychology and theology. Also, they will find what kind of classifications that I align with and why I chose it. Furthermore, there will be discussions of why I chose certain methods due to their goals and their own personal needs. Finally, the reader will learn why I chosen certain integrational method such as Adams and Powlison on their views of change and their shared ideas that I would acknowledge through this paper. Primary Goal The primary goal for counseling that I have considered is a biblical method that would to integrate biblical standards that show respect towards psychology for when it benefits the client needs. My goal is more integrational utilizing psychology, theology and spirituality because of what they have to offer one another. I believe that God is the answer and that I will need to meet my client where they are in their healing journey. I have also found within my research that psychology and theology are beneficial towards each other when used for purposes of good. As a result, I have found that Kollar and Adam’s approach could be beneficial towards the client. Entwistle informs that integration speak about the truth while acknowledging Gods very own existence (Entwistle, 2015 p.6). He also discusses multiple historical backgrounds of how biblical teachings have been categorized throughout the years and how they will be continuing to be categorized due to their certain methods. I would like to be flexible as well for those who would like do short term counseling and also long term. However, the outcome that I desire is would be able to help the
PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 3 client in their spiritually journey to where I can help them find out where they feel that should be in their life. Development of Problems and Personal Need Problems are bound to happen in our lifetime. We are humans. As a result, we all have basis human needs that we want to feel content in our lifetime. As humans, we seek to be happy and when we are not happy; problems arise. Due to my belief, I view sin as the problem. According to Wilson who informs readers in her book that most of our adult life problems are a result of childhood solutions (Wilson, 2001). The bible says Romans 3 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. This tells me that we are not perfect, nor can we ever be perfect because sin will always be apart of this world. However, we can strive to be Christ like by trying to do what is right. One expert suggest that people greatest personal need is longing for relational connections and belongingness (Benner, 2015) Furthermore, human beings deal with physical, mental, sociological, and spiritual afflictions in their life. Like Adams, I also share his ideas on the personal needs and problems that humans have challenges with in their lifetime. Adams identifies that sin is the overall problem (Powlison, 2012). Adams acknowledged the issue as sin and how it influences humans in every aspect of their life. He also agrees with Wilson on their perspective on problems arising in the person life in early stages of their life as well. Furthermore, these authors also recognize how the lack of the relationship with God is also involved in the individual’s life. Biblical Integration Biblical integration serves a valuable purpose when it comes to counseling. I like the characteristics of Adams and Crabb’s have when it comes to their interpretation on integrating the two disciplines. I would integrate their approach in my counseling methods when it comes to

PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 4 being informal and always standing on the bible for absolutions. When it comes to biblical integration, I also believe that spiritual wellness is a key element towards a person success. I also choose not to ignore what certain psychology teachings because they offer something valuable in certain aspects on biblical integration. As a result, the bible will be an instruction manual to where it serves with a purpose on the client should live their lives. Also, Adams viewed the Law of God along with Biblicism were essential and God words was final (Powlison, 2010). Formula for Change How I view change to happen will be similar to the strength that Adams has on helping with navigating their change. I feel that a more informal approach would be beneficial. Since Adams concept was more informal; he surrounded his counseling method on three stages. These three stages were called confrontation, concern, and change. I would like to integrate these stages in a informal manner during the change process. Additionally, Crabb’s shared the same concept that I would like to utilize in certain cases. They both viewed that the change process between the client and counselor must have a trusting relationship and also filled with encouragement. Personally; I believe that change is possible if the client is willing and accepting to change. Yet, Crabb’s approach break them down a little better to where the counselor and the client can make plans at each stage as they continue their growth and healing journey. Balance of Theology and Spirituality Utilizing what I learned from authors such as Adams, Crabb’s, and even Entwistle have confirmed my beliefs on how there is a balance between theology and spiritualty. The balance of theology and spirituality comes from finding where they can benefit from one another. As a result, so do I. Adams and Crabb’s acknowledge the ties that theology and spirituality share. They both believe that God is sovereign in their teaching. Entwistle adds that just because
PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 5 theology and psychology is different; does not mean that can no co-exist (Entwistle, 2015). Entwistle informed his readers on different types of models that can define the similarities and differences. Human Personality God created human kind. Our very own existence was created out of love. One author informs that humans are relational beings (Kollar, 2011). This just confirms that humans are not made to be alone and want to be content with love. One expert informs that trying to understand human nature is the understanding that there is a crossroads between theology and psychology (Entwistle, 2015). Human are also complexed filled with emotional challenges as a result of us being born into sin. I would have to agree with Entwistle perspective and also Adams on his view of humans. Adams also believed that when human lack love is tied to their lack of relationship with God (Powlison,2010). This influences my share of thinking on the type of clients that I would wish to counsel due to the emotional gap of love that they desire. Counselor’s Function and Role When it comes to the functions between the counselor and client; it should be an encouraging one. Similar to Crabb’s approach on ensuring that the client is able to share their views to the counselor. Like Crabb. I would provide encouragement and confront the problems with the client. Adams and Benner had a unique approach in their methods by choosing to be informal. I would like to incorporate this because it can provide the client more freedom to share their own thoughts in feeling without feeling restricted in their healing journey. One expert suggests that integrating the spiritual disciplines such as prayer into a life that endures (Ortenburg,2002).
PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 6 A counselor must be able to help build up the client sense of integrity that follows with a trusting relationship between them. As a result, the counselor will be able to more effectively provide the client with positive feedback or even negative feedback because it can receive better due to their trusting relationship. The counselor has also created this safe space for the client to feel not judged from the confrontation and can be able to feel sense of respect from the confrontation. Also, the counselor providing the encouragement from the feedback can help bring better perspective on the client towards where they wish to do next with their life. However, the client has to be willing to listen and reflect on their actions so that can be willing to change. Contribution to Your Personal Theory for Counseling Biblical counselors such as Wilson, Adams, Crabb’s have provided me with a element of counseling that can be utilized in my own personal theory. The creator of Nouthetic counseling, Jay Adams, has contributed an informal and unique way to towards my counseling method. His method to provide encourage in the time to confront gives a genuine appreciation in helping the client. Also, Adams idea of nouthetic counseling brought a mainstream of resources that pivoted the biblical counseling movement. Furthermore, Crabb’s also shares the same approach as a biblical counselor with Adams. Crabb’s contributed his unique models that can be utilized in the Christian counseling and church setting (Crabbs,1977). Also, Wilson provided insight to the problems that arise as a child that transition into our adulthood. She provided insight of adults have to be mindful on what we carry into our adulthood. Each of these authors provide an element that can be used in to help and break down the problems that the client wishes to resolve. Each of these authors have to so much to offer in counseling that could be integrated in useful way for me.

PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 7 Limitations of This Counseling Theory There would be a few limitations in my integrative counseling theory. My method would be beneficial in spiritual group settings within the church or any spiritual setting. It can also be used for groups, family, and also individuals when needed. My approach has flexibility to cater to the client’s needs but also had its limitations. However, my method could not be used in certain settings. For example, I would not be able to utilize my method in clinical settings due to ethical standards. In clinical setting, the counselor has to be respectful to all cultural backgrounds. This approach would not work on someone who does not have any spiritual belief or Christian belief. As a result, this can not be used in a secular setting. Furthermore, this would not benefit the client due to the setting and their own spiritual preferences. Classification I would consider my classification to be integrational because of the beneficial varieties that it has to offer client. I have become more open minded on what psychology has to offer and the variety of ways of integrating both psychology and theology. In Integrative Therapy, it combines different therapeutic tools and approaches to fit the needs of the individual client. I find this more relatable in numerous ways because of what authors such as Entwistle informs us about the benefits on them. Integrating different forms of psychotherapy offer multiple platforms that could be used in dealing with client because not every client will come in with the same problem. Integrational counseling provides me with more flexibility that can suit the client’s needs that also provides a balance in all areas. Practical Application Utility for Counseling and Potential Personal Influence
PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 8 I want my method to be utilized for people that feel broken and would like to be put back together in a spiritual integrative way. I feel that my method would be successful in group settings more but also individuals dealing with similar issues. For example, I would like to utilize my method with recovery support group such as addiction, domestic violence, or crisis groups. Most of these support groups are centered in church or the local community that utilize spiritual models. It is people like Adams, Crabb’s, and Benner who have shared interests like I do in wanting to help heal clients from the inflicted basic need that ties with spiritual healing. They give credit to certain psychologist when it becomes beneficial to the client. They are not opposed to all methods of psychology but only when it becomes helpful to serving the client. I would like to do the same. I wish to not diagnose but to simply help them with their shared methods that offers ongoing encouragement. Brief Example in a Counseling Moment My life purpose is about serving God in every way that I can. I have chosen the career path in mental health that services helping broken families. I also serve as the church leading last due to my husband being the pastor. However, I was not always this way. I had a past to where I didn’t give God the acknowledge that he deserves and I paid it for it in a heart-breaking way. I can say that God has a way of showing you what can happen when you leave him out of your life. Now, I serve him proudly with thanksgiving helping others in times of need. My husband and I help with youth, marriages, and within the community. Currently, I spend my time working with troubled youth in foster can and also speaking to people in recovery from substance abuse. My method would be able to give clients the safe comfort of knowing that they have the freedom to deal with their problems in their time. I want clients to feel that they are not judged by their problems and feel that they can change in the environment that I provide for them. Hopefully,
PERSONAL THEORY PAPER 9 people eon the support group are able to begin to feel a sense of peace that they share with others in the group that share their similar battles. Also, my method can be able to have them reflect on their own problems in an encouraging manner and find support in each other. Furthermore, they would be able to seek Christ together and bond through their shared experiences. Conclusion This paper has showed my goals for my own personal theory, the biblical integration, development of problems, my formula for change, and even my choice of classification in this paper. Hopefully, the reader has gathered clear reasons on why I chose certain influencers on their methodologies and ideas. I would love to integrate what I have learn in the future so that I can help a person the best way I can by not limiting myself in their healing journey. Integrating what ideas are shares in nouthetic counseling and other types of psychotherapies can provide something beneficial to each client. My desire outcome for my counseling approach to be able to be flexible integrating different forms in my method that allows change to happen at any stage to reach a spiritual heal. I want the client to feel better about themselves in all areas of their life such as mentally, physically, and spiritually in their healing process. Also, they will come to learn and identify their problem that has been created and to understand the cause of their problem. This will allow them to confront their problem at their own level while I provide positive feedback and encouragement. Hopefully, the reader has also learned how I wish to formulate that change in a informal manner applying Adams method when I can and also Crabb’s method. Hopefully, the reader has also learned my role and also the client role in this paper. The counselor role is to be encouraging but also provide positive feedback so that the client can receive the feedback more effectively. Overall, my method should be viewed with a delicate touch to reach those in their desired
