Case 9.2
Kassy’s Story Questions
1.
In the chapter, Bill George’s approach to authentic leadership
suggests that truly authentic leaders exhibit passion, strong
values, connectedness, consistency, and compassion. In what
way has Gutierrez shown these qualities?
Gutierrez demonstrates her passion through her entire classroom.
Knowing the background of her students, she created an inclusive
classroom environment that is welcoming, safe, and a place to feel
embraced.
She connects with students by providing time and a space for students
to share their concerns, challenges and stories and sometimes sharing
her own story, so they don’t feel alone.
By ensuring a safe community, restorative circles, being honest, and
creating a place where all children and teachers feel they belong
demonstrates the importance of values, honesty, integrity, courage,
accountability, collaboration, and respect.
Gutierrez compassion reins though her classroom. She built a
classroom that is inclusive of race, cultural and economic diversity.
In
addition, her program encourages children to embrace their
differences and build relations with everyone, regardless of their
differences. The classroom recognizes the traumas and challenges of
these children and creates a forum to not only learn but manage their
everyday life. The ability for Gutierrez to focus on the issues that
impact learning and understand that they need to be managed to
impact change is the sign of a very compassionate individual.
Which characteristics are most representative of Gutierrez?
Discuss.
The characteristics most representative of Gutierrez is compassion and
consistency. Ever since she was a child, she was very self-aware of her
differences, so she is able to understand the children’s challenges and
connect with them help guide them. Being sensitive to the diversity in
her classroom and her own experiences, she uses her compassion to
lead how she sets up her classroom, her teaching style, and how she
communicates.
2.
The Model of Authentic Leadership (Figure 9.2) posits that
critical life events shape an individual’s development as an
authentic leader. In what way do you think this has been true
for Gutierrez?
Bill George states that understanding yourself is one of the keys to be
an authentic leader. Gutierrez shares her life story and how her
formative years impacted her childhood and became the framework for
her professional life as a teacher. Her own story forced her to become
self-ware, it guided her behavior and moral compass. As she older, and
became the context of her authentic leadership style. Remembering
her own story, as a leader she was open and honest, was keen on
treating all the children fairly, she a a strong moral compass, and knew
exactly who she was and shared that with her colleagues and students.
Her critical life experiences was the catalyst that stimulated her
personal growth to make change, it motivated her to succeed and
become an authentic leader as exemplified in this diagram,
3.
When leaders tell their life stories, they gain greater self-
knowledge and a clearer picture of who they are and their role.
Do you think telling her story has been helpful to Gutierrez and
the school community? If you were Gutierrez, would you have
shared your story so openly?
Absolutely! Gutierrez sharing her story has been beneficial for herself
and probably more so for the community of teachers, parents, and
students she encounters every day. When someone is vulnerable, they
earn respect, trust, and gain a connection. Storytelling can also lead to
mutual disclosure, strengthening the bond between the leader and
their team. By continuing to tell her story, Gutierrez should continue to
gain self-knowledge, gain greater clarity about who they are and
improve their organizational performance as an authentic leader.
What are the implications for a leader when sharing personal
stories with the public? Discuss
Stories can be powerful tool since it helps her build bridges with her
students and fellow colleagues. A leader’s story can make someone
feel less alone, evoke compassion, make them more human, and real.
It is important to ensure stories convey a message and are meaningful
to ensure listeners remain engaged and can see the value in the
message. Negative stories can backfire and alienate people, so the
message and how the story is conveyed is vital.
4.
As illustrated in Figure 9.2, authentic leaders use their internal
moral perspective to guide their behavior and are motivated
by higher-order values such as justice and community.
Describe Gutierrez’s moral perspective and the impact it has
on her behavior as a leader. How does her moral perspective
impact how she is viewed by others?
As a child, Gutierrez never felt like she belonged anywhere. She was bi-
racial child who was not accepted in her white Christian school, by her
Spanish family, or her white family. No matter where she went, she
experienced racism, inequality, and trauma. These experiences shaped
her moral perspective. As a teacher in a socially and racially diverse
community, Gutierrez found a place as a teacher where she could
make a different a place where she belonged. By capitalizing on her
experiences, she used her life-long experience to create an
environment where regardless of anyone’s differences, everyone was
held accountable for their actions. No longer would anyone stand idly
by and allow children to be bullied or not included due to their
differences, Gutierrez focused her efforts on doing what was best for
the greater good or her classroom, her school, and the community.
How does her moral perspective impact how she is viewed by
others?
Her perspective must have been viewed favorably since she mentioned
that the teachers were intentional about building trustworthy and
collaborative relationships. Most significantly, she stated that she no
longer questioned her own belonging, since she brings that feeling to
work every day to help her students and colleagues.
