Step 2. Answer the following questions, applying the vocabulary and concepts from the tutorials
.
1. Give the name of the company or organization you have chosen from the list above.
Starbucks
2. Find each of the following topics in the code of ethics you have chosen. Write 1-2
sentences paraphrasing or summarizing the company policy on each topic.
Basic conduct
Equal opportunity and fair treatment for all employees. Everyone
should feel welcomed when they are in this place of
establishment and free of harassment, bullying, and
discrimination.
Confidentiality
All Starbucks related information must stay within the company
and cannot be shared outside of the company. If an employee
leaves, all materials and properties must be returned. Personal
information of customers must be strictly protected.
Competition
Fair competition laws are used to promote competition in a free
market. Practices may include not discussing pricing, production,
or markets with competitors.
Giving and receiving gifts
Accepting gifts/favors should not be accepted if it might create
conflict. It can be seen as an attempt to influence or bribe.
Insider trading
Partners should be aware of “material nonpublic information.”
Partners may not buy or sell stock while they have this
information.
Social media usage
It is advised not to spread false information, rumors, or
misleading claims. Doing so can hurt the company’s reputation as
well as the employee, making it less likely that another company
will hire you.
Disparagement
Starbucks lives up to its standards and expectations. They deliver
what they promise. They place a strong value on their reputation
with customers.
3. Based on the evidence seen in part 2, write a 5-7 sentence paragraph describing
whether the company’s ethical code describes an ethical minimum (legal compliance) or
a higher ethical standard. Support your answers with specific examples from the code
of ethics.
Starbucks seem to have a higher ethical standard than most companies. The brand is well-
known internationally so the standards that are set in place are very firm and solid. They do
well to maintain good quality product while providing stellar customer service. In order to have
so many successful locations, the employees that work for Starbucks must comply with the
code of conduct that has been established. Starbucks does well rewarding its employees and
encourages them to perform their best.
4. Based on the evidence seen in part 2, write a 5-7 sentence paragraph describing what
kind of culture the company seems to have based on the competing values framework
(adhocracy, clan, market, hierarchy). Write 5-7 sentences supporting your answer with
specific examples from the code of ethics.
It seems like Starbucks operates under a clan culture. With their strong sense of community
and belonging, they really foster the idea of working together to make a difference. Starbucks
encourages collaboration and togetherness amongst the team. The employees are often
referred to as “partners.” There is a small sense of market culture, as well. Their competitive
drive focuses on gaining the most profit and growing their brand recognition.
5. Based on the evidence seen in part 2, write a 5-7 sentence paragraph describing what
ethical theory they seem to follow (virtue ethics, utilitarianism, or deontology). Support
your answer with specific examples from the code of ethics.
Many large corporations use a mix of ethical theory styles. Starbucks likes to use a mixture of
utilitarianism and virtue aspects. They frequently observe their situation before making a
decision. A decision which should benefit most, if not all, parties. Virtually, they also consider
social and environmental responsibility. Starbucks strives to continue aligning their ethics as
having strong virtue.
6. Based on this organization’s code of ethics, write 2-3 sentences in response to each
question.
Do you feel they are
reasonable and employee-
centered?
Yes. They seem to really care about the well-being of their
employees. It is important that the staff feels like all of their hard
work does not go unnoticed.
Do any of the policies give
you concern?
No, their policies do not concern me. Starbuck has been around
for a long time, so it is likely that they have revised the policy
enough to suit all parties.
Would you want to work
here? Why or why not?
Starbucks seems like a great job to have. There are ample
opportunities, plenty of hours, and great benefits. I believe there
is also a program for paid tuition.
What additional information
would you find useful
before making a decision
to work here or not?
I would like to work for Starbucks at a corporate level. So, what
are the chances of getting to that level by starting at retail? Also,
what other things does Starbucks do for its employees? Do they
have any special gathering or events that could possibly help
each franchise grow its business?
Step 3. Refer to the checklist below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your
Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.
