FRAMING THEORY
Framing Theory
Framing in the media can take place in many forms. Sometimes it can be challenging to
identify framing within the news. Framing can be identified in five popular ways including
through conflict, human interest/personalization, consequence, morality, and responsibility
(Arowolo, 2017). With the recent decision made in Texas, abortion has become a major health
issue that the framing theory can be applied to and identified with in the news. News outlets
across the county are covering Texas’ abortion decision and each have their own way of framing.
Media outlets such as NBC News have framed a few of their news stories about the Texas
abortion law using conflict, human interest, and morality. For example, on September 5
th
, NBC
News released an article with the headline “Anti-abortion groups are fired up over the Texas
ruling. They’re just getting started” (Finn and Smith, 2021). This form of framing uses conflict
between parties as a priority approach rather than the decision made (Arowolo, 2017). Earlier
that day, NBC News released an article headlined “Experts say Texas’ abortion law GOP policies
have an outsize effect on the poor” (Adams, 2021). This article used morality and human interest
to influence how the audience interpreted the information.
Both news articles took a slightly
different framing approach with similar agendas.
Framing influences the audience by diverting their attention to what the creator of the
news source (article, social media post, infographic, video, etc.) deems important. By using
framing methods such as human interest and morality, news outlets are able to create an
emotional connection with the audience. This may cause the audience to become more conscious
of the issue at hand. Framing may also influence how the audience decides to view the topic
going forward. For example, those who viewed the previously mentioned NBC News articles
may be more inclined to be opposed to the Texas abortion decision due to how the information

was framed. On the other hand, other media outlets may use a different framing approach which
cause the audience to agree with the decision.
