Yvonne Wyatt-Rose Ethics Homework – Ch.11 Answer the Chapter 11 objective questions o Describe what is mean by the term competence Competence is described as having the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform those tasks relevant to that profession. Specific to the helping profession, competence is the ability to perform services as defined in professional standards or regulatory statutes, using proper conduct within the profession as the comparative standard o Discuss the role of continuing education, ongoing supervision, and consultation in the continuous development of professional competence. In order to continue development of professional competence, practitioners must remain current with emerging knowledge relevant to their profession. This is called continuing education and can be received by attending professional conferences or taking additional coursework to receive credits. When a p ractitioners’ competency includes working within their scope of expertise and knowing when to consult or refer to another professional this is known as ongoing supervision and consultation. o Describe the value of approaching practice from a reflective, action research orientation. The value of approaching practice from a reflective, action research orientation is that it provides practitioners with the means of acquiring valid, useful data and results in the development of effective strategies. The practitioner can apply it in practice because it is systematic and rational, supporting reflective thinking and increased awareness of effectiveness. Action research is also a mechanism for monitoring the efficacy and adequacy of practice decisions. o Discuss the conditions under which referral would appear to be the most efficacious treatment decisions
Referral appear to be the most efficacious treatment decision when helpers are unable to provide professional, competent services. Practitioners should assess the nature of the specific support and services needed. If client services extend beyond the scope of their competence, the helper will have known referral sources to give to the clients o Describe legal considerations and concerns in relation to the issue of helper competence, standard of care, and treatment efficacy. Legal considerations and concerns in relation to the issue of helper competence, standard of care and treatment efficacy should always of importance in the helping profession Ethical responsibility supports that a practitioner will not practice outside their level of competence. Therefore, the practitioner is required to pursue continuing education opportunities along with supervision and consultation to broaden their scope of knowledge. Practitioners uphold a standard of care which supports treatment efficacy. Complete the cooperative learning exercise on page 293. You MUST work with a partner on this exercise so please plan ahead. You do not have to get together to do this, you can communicate via phone, social media, etc. To complete this portion of the homework assignment, I communicated with classmate and social work cohort, Taylor Lewis. Taylor and I have had the privilege to have several classes together of the last few semester as have established a support system for one another as we complete our education. Goal Identification: My identified goal is to become a practitioner who works with children and adolescents. I would like to secure a position as a school social worker or with some entity such as Communities in Schools that collaborate with the education systems in an effort to meet the social and academic needs of students and families, connecting them with resources and support to aid in their growth and wellness. Much like Taylor whose overall goal is to help all marginalized populations receive the resources they actually need, while my desire is more focused towards a direct population, I am open to all opportunities to advocate on behalf of all marginalized populations. I envision working with students on the elementary level as a viable support toward their academic success in a manger that is necessary for their individual situation. That could include academic support such as tutoring, behavioral support, consultation with teachers, parents and administration, family support or individual and group therapy. Legal Requirements : In Texas, all prospective social workers must hold a bachelor’s degree or master's degree in social work and obtain a social work license.
Once employment is secured, school social workers are required to maintain their license in order to continue practice Contact: The current school social worker at my elementary school campus holds a bachelor’s degree and is a licensed social worker in the state of Texas. She has been employed with the district one year. This is her first job in the field of social work upon graduating in the Spring of this year. (actually the summer due to Covid) She is required during the summer to participate in professional development training sessions and has places to attend a profession conference for school social workers to enhance her competency. While she practices within the district, she is not employed by the district. She is contracted though an outside agency so when she receives complaints that are outside the boundaries of her competence, she refers them to her agency, Communities in Schools for added support or receives supervisory consultation on how to proceed. Contracts : After discussing my vision and goals with both Taylor and my school counselor, it was the consensus that upon graduating with my bachelor’s degree next summer, I would be in position to secure a position as social consultant but would lack the requirements to functions as a school social work. In the state of Texas without a license, you are not considered a social work so in order to bridge the gap in my current state and obtaining my goal, I plan to pursue my master’s degree immediately upon completion of my bachelors and to sit for my licenser. Upon completion, I will be qualified to apply for employment as a school social worker within the state of Texas Define the important terms from the chapter Action research - provides practitioners with the means of acquiring valid, useful data and results in the development of effective strategies Best practice – using standard of care and best research to support providing Brief therapy – a rapid implementation of change strategies. Usually consists of limited sessions (6-20) that rely on assessment and client engagement to provide clients with tools to change basic attitudes, behaviors and a variety of underlying problems rather than long scale or pervasive change Certification – aspired levels of training, certification is voluntary and allows the person to use a title Competence - Helpers have the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform those tasks relevant to that profession: it is defined using the conduct of others within the profession as the comparative standard Continuing education – the development and maintenance of foundational knowledge and skills via continuous professional growth; practitioners are to remain current in relation to emerging knowledge of their profession Customary – practice or procedures that are usually standard in service in a given profession
