Yvonne Wyatt-Rose #0450499 Homework for Chapter 2 Part One: Complete the questions about cooperative learning. Please make sure all answers are in complete sentences and a full paragraph or more. Part 1: Identify your own values as they impact your opinion on each of the following: Divorce – My personal values in reference to divorce have changed dramatically over the last several years. It was not until my own marriage of 24 years ended in divorce that I understood that sometime is the best and only option. Previous to my personal situation, I did not believe in divorce. I felt marriage was sacred and you do what every you have to do to fix it and salvage the married. However, when my husband confronted me with the ultimatum and already had another partner, there was not much I could do but focus on getting myself together and make decisions to benefit me and my children’s future. That is how I ended up returning to school in my 40’s. Therefore, I know understand, sometimes divorce is inevitable and doesn’t mean you didn’t try Abortion – My personal value about abortion is that it is a women’s right to choose. It is her body and she gets to decide what is best for her. I am very spiritual and am aware of all the biblical principles most people use to argue against it. Yet, I also believe there are so many other things biblically that we don’t follow to the law, so to condemn one and not the other is not mine to do. There are so many factors that go into making the decision for or against an abortion so to impose opinion is something I leave to the women. Extramarital sexual Affairs – I do believe in loyalty and commitment. I believe that marriage is sacred and to be respected. Infidelity causes damage to not only the individuals involve but often times children and extended family. I realize this is a strong bias of mine and also recognize it is in part due to the way my marriage ended. I am against extramarital sexual affairs and believe people should not commit to marriage if they are not ready to practice monogamy. Spanking – I believe in spanking. I do not believe in abuse, yet, by whose standard do you gage what is appropriate when many believe any form of physical punishment is abuse. I view spanking as a form of disciple. I was spanked as a child and I used spanking to discipline my own children. I do support other methods of punishment to correct behavior but also feel a parent should be allowed to spank their child in moderation. Marijuana – My personal value toward marijuana usage is another value that has changed over the last several years. With the legalization of marijuana usage sweeping
the nation and continued research to support the medical benefits of its usage, I have a better understanding of why many indulge in recreational participation. Education is key and it is important to gain knowledge and understanding which is what I had to do. In my opinion marijuana is no different than tobacco and alcohol which are both legal substances. I don’t indulge but I also don’t frown on anyone who does unless it is addition and not recreation. Sexual Orientation – I believe that everyone has the right to be in relationship with whom they choose and a person’s sexual orientation is their right. I am a pastor’s daughter and grew up in a home with strict religious values. However, upon losing a relative to HIV who was part of the LBGCT community, it allowed me so really do some soul searching. He had isolated himself as a result of feeling rejected by close family and friends and all I could think was, how alone he must have been. It was then I began to learn about the culture and community to better understand it and made a personal vow to be more accepting and understanding, to not judge. What may not be my preference doesn’t make me right or wrong, it’s just what is best for me and I have grown to respect others for their decisions and choices. Children’s rights – I believe strongly in children’s rights and believe they are in need of someone to advocate on their behalf. This is a huge part of the reason I work in education and desired to be a social worker. On a daily basis, I see so many of my students face challenges and struggles that they are unable to change. They have no voice or no one to put them first so I believe in children’s right and that we should always do what is in the best interest of the child because it effects who they will become. Importance of Schedules and planning – While I do understand the importance of schedules and planning, this is a weakness for me. I am very spontaneous and whimsical so I am not always the best at planning things out. I am learning however; this is not always best. As I continue my educational journey, I am learning to appreciate the importance of schedules and planning but am able to acknowledge I have an issue with time and prioritizing things out. I can say I am much better than I was when I first returned to school and have adopted a few tips from some of my professors and cohorts that have been quite beneficial. I will be continuing to grow in this area. Importance of success and achievement – Success and achievement is important to me because it helps you have a sense of accomplishment and purpose. I never would have expected to be in my 40’s returning to college but here I am. I was apprehensive and very nervous but I knew it was necessary and would be beneficial in the end. I can remember how I felt when I received my Associate Degree. The joy I felt was overwhelming. I had set a goal and achieved it and it was wonderful. I realize many people view success in many different ways and may desire many different things to fit criteria of successfulness but to set a goal on any level and be able to look back and see it was reached, is enough to motivate anyone to keep moving forward.
Spirituality – I am very spiritual and value my spirituality. I am part of the Baptist faith and have had a personal relationship with God from an early age. Spirituality is an important part of who I am and I hold it responsible for shaping into the women I have become. I do realize however, I must not impress my religious opinions and beliefs upon others nor allow it to alter my decision making when servicing a client. As I mature, I understanding how to balance being who you are and respecting others for who they are because I believe that is the beauty of what make this world and we can all learn something from one another even in our differences. Part 2: 1. I would first have a conversation with her to determine what is her desired end result. I would inquire about her values and whether she wants to tell the husband, keep the child or have an abortion. This would then determine my course of action. I would also inquire has she confirmed the pregnancy with medical staff. If she desires to keep the pregnancy, I would refer her to medical treatment to address proper health care. If abortion is her choice, I would refer her to a clinic or facility to assist in the procedure. If adoption is her desired option, I would refer her to an adoption agency to provide her knowledge and information in reference to adoptions. I would suggest she see a therapist to discuss the affair and any marital concerns that may have led to her decision to have an extramarital sexual affair. I would have a discussion with her about the time sensitivity of her decisions due to the set a specific date in which to follow up with her to discuss future options in necessary based on her decisions. My personal opinion or biases are not in play during this assessment. Although I do not condone extramarital affairs, it is my duty to connect her with resources that would benefit her situation. I do believe it is a women’s right to choose and would have no problem assisting her should this be her option. 2. I would have a discussion with the 12-year old asking open ended questions about his stress and depression in an effort to obtain more information about his mental state because he stated he is stressed and depressed. I would inquire with his parents if there is any history of depression or mental illness that could potentially be a contributing factor in his using the drugs. I would not however, disclose his sexual orientation. He is my client and my responsibility is to him. I would suggest he see a therapist in reference to the drug usage and help him to address his issues of concern about his parents facing his sexual orientation. Depending on any obtained knowledge in reference to mental illness or other medical concerns for the depression, I would also suggest medical treatment to assist with the depression. My personal values and believes on sexual orientation would not nor did they influence my ability to access this client and because there is on physical danger or harm to him, I would honor his request and not tell his parents. 3. I would have a conversation with the student in reference to his values and beliefs on education along with allowing him to enlighten me on his spirituality. I

would ask questions about his home life, peer relationships and any other factors that may have influence over his life. I would then talk to him about the benefits of an education and about balance, highlighting his ability to focus on his education and his spirituality as playing an important role in his life. Even with such a high IG, I would make sure he is not struggling in any area and if so, suggest he tutoring and inquire about any upcoming test or assignments that would require direct attention. I would then set a date to follow up with him to see if there is any progress or change in his situation. I recognize this situation could potentially challenge me and I would have to be very careful as to not impose my spirituality and personal views on the student. I am very passionate about my spirituality and while I don’t see it being a problem in accessing the situation, I would not want to be unethical and not practice emotional objectivity in the situation.
