Exegetical Step 10: THEOLOGY AND APPLICATION | Psalm 1 THEOLOGY:
Purpose: Recognizing that the biblical text has a voice of its own and after having investigated aspects of its linguistic, literary, cultural, and historical contexts and made
interpretive decisions to formulate a description of the intended message of the passage, we reflect on and articulate the theological impact of the passage grounded in the passage’s intended message. Anticipate spending 2 to 2 ½ hours on this step.
Instructions: Provide at least 1-2 answers to each of the five basic questions. A well-
designed answer uses the biblical passage to explain in 2-3 sentences the theological implication of the text in relation to the theological question. Don’t be afraid to state the obvious, but always draw from the text
to support your theological conclusions. There are five basic theological questions: 1.
What does the passage teach about God? • Psalm 1 presents God as the source of blessing and ultimate authority in the lives of the righteous. God is portrayed as the One who delights in those who meditate on His Word day and night, granting them prosperity and stability. This passage highlights God's role as the giver of life, direction, and favor to those who seek Him.
2.
What does the passage teach about humankind?
• Psalm 1 contrasts two types of people: the righteous and the wicked. It teaches that humankind has a choice in how they live their lives. The righteous are characterized by their delight in God's
Word and meditation on it, leading to a fruitful and blessed life. In contrast, the wicked are those who reject God's ways and ultimately face destruction.
3.
What does the passage teach about the relationship between God and humankind?
• Psalm 1 underscores the importance of a deep and continuous relationship between God and humankind. The righteous are described as those who meditate on God's Word day and night, indicating a constant communion with God through His revealed truth. This relationship is the source of their blessedness and sets them apart from the wicked.
4.
What does the passage teach about the responsibilities God gives to humankind?
• The passage highlights the responsibility of humankind to choose their way of life. God's Word
is set before them as a guide for righteous living. The responsibility given is to delight in and meditate on God's Word, which in turn leads to a life that bears good fruit. This emphasizes the human responsibility to align their thoughts and actions with God's revealed will.

5.
What does the passage teach about how people should treat each other, particularly in light of our relationship to God?
• While Psalm 1 primarily focuses on the individual's relationship with God, it indirectly teaches that those who delight in God's Word and walk in righteousness will be a positive influence on others. Their lives of integrity and wisdom serve as a testimony to the surrounding community. The passage encourages a righteous lifestyle that can positively impact how people treat each other, promoting values of honesty, justice, and godliness.
APPLICATION – CONSIDER HOW SPECIFIC THEOLOGICAL THEMES SHOULD AFFECT YOUR VALUES & ACTIONS
Purpose: Recognizing that the biblical text has a voice of its own and after having investigated aspects of its linguistic, literary, cultural, and historical contexts and made interpretive decisions to formulate a description of the intended message of the passage, we reflect on and articulate the theological and practical impact of the passage grounded in the passage’s intended message.
Instructions: Choose two theological themes (choose two of your answers to the questions above
) and list them with their biblical citation. For each of your two themes
you chose, answer each of the following questions as specifically as you can with a well-
thought out paragraph, then write an overall prayer:
1.
Universal

about humanity, the Church, creation, world/society, God and their relationships?
2.

Theme 1: Universal (Psalm 1's teaching about the deep and continuous relationship between God and humankind)
La131 Reflection Step –Theology and Application – Assignment | 3
Universal - The profound teaching in Psalm 1 about the deep and continuous relationship between God and humankind challenges my thinking about humanity, the Church, and our relationship with God. It underscores the fundamental truth that God desires an ongoing and intimate connection with us
through His Word. This concept reshapes my understanding of God's constant presence and His desire to guide and bless us. It highlights the importance of prioritizing this relationship above all
else, and I am compelled to view humanity as having the potential for a deeper, more meaningful
connection with God. It also calls the Church to emphasize this relationship as the cornerstone of
faith.
Personal - I should appreciate the privilege of a continuous relationship with God through His Word. This theme encourages me to savor the moments of communion with God in my daily life
and see it as a source of joy and nourishment for my soul. I should strive to be a person who constantly seeks God's presence through meditation on His Word. This involves prioritizing daily engagement with Scripture, prayer, and reflection. The response is to make this relationship
with God a foundational aspect of my life, and in doing so, I can experience the profound blessings that come from this ongoing connection.
Theme 2: Universal (Psalm 1's teaching about the positive influence of the righteous on others)
Universal - The second theme, emphasizing the positive influence of the righteous on others, transforms my thinking about the Church, creation, and world/society. While Psalm 1 primarily addresses individual relationships with God, it indirectly reveals the impact of living a righteous life. It challenges me to view the Church as a community of individuals whose integrity and wisdom collectively inspire positive change in the world. This theme prompts me to appreciate the potential for the Church to be a source of light and influence in society, fostering values of honesty, justice, and godliness. Personal - I should appreciate the transformative power of leading a righteous life and its potential to positively impact others. This theme encourages me to savor the moments when my actions align with God's Word and inspire those around me. I should strive to be a person of integrity and wisdom, living a righteous lifestyle that serves as a testimony to the world. In response, I can actively seek opportunities to influence my communities positively, promoting values of honesty, justice, and godliness. This may involve being a source of encouragement and support to those I interact with and striving to be an example of godly living.
Overall Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, I am grateful for the wisdom and insight gained from Psalm 1. Help me to
embrace the profound truths about the continuous relationship you desire with us through Your Word. May I cherish and prioritize this relationship in my life, finding joy in the communion with You. Grant me the strength and determination to meditate on Your Word day and night. I also pray for the ability to be a positive influence on those around me, living a life of integrity and wisdom that testifies to the blessings of righteousness. May I promote values of honesty, justice, and godliness in my interactions with others. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
