Ethics committee paper
The U.S. House Committee on Ethics, established in 1967, is a unique institution. Members of the Committee are evenly divided among each party, making it the only standing committee of the House that is evenly divided. Each party is represented by five members on the Committee. The Committee on Ethics also employs nonpartisan staff to conduct its daily business, unlike other committees. I came across three famous cases, including "the God Committee, Quinlan, and Cruzan" (Aulisio, 2016). All of them are characterized by technological developments, value-laden questions, clashes between values within a pluralistic context, and relative time pressures on decision making. These characteristics
are what led ethics committees to exist in the first place - a need that is unlikely to abate in the near future (
Committee History
, 2023). Upon consideration for joining the committee, I would like to involve members with a diversity of backgrounds and also examine their educational background.
Ethics communities provide guidance and assistance in addressing any ethical issues that may arise when treating patients. The purpose of this system is to facilitate a smooth decision-
making process that is centered around the client. It is recommended that members of the ethics committee be drawn from a variety of backgrounds. It is desirable for them to have a variety of educational backgrounds, professional backgrounds, as well as varying religious backgrounds and moral experiences. Additionally, these individuals need to be experts, such as a doctor who can deliver medical advice and a nurse who can give patient-centered care. For example, we would need a doctor who could provide medical advice and ensure that patient-centered care is

provided. The potential impact on the family would also require the assistance of a social worker

Problems that raise ethical and moral concerns would be dealt with by the ethics committee. As an example, a future mother may visit the hospital after learning the results of genetic testing for her newborn (
Committee History
, 2023). As a result of discovering that her child will be affected by a disease, she wants to terminate the pregnancy after five months. The question may be raised whether aborting a child who has been genetically tested and is known to have a particular disease is acceptable. In order to determine whether this action is ethical or not, the ethics community can break it down and conduct further research. To determine whether an abortion is ethical or not, it must be determined what the disease is, the life expectancy of the child, and the quality of life the child is projected to have.
As a personal matter, I am not interested in serving on an ethics committee because I feel that it would be too personal. It is difficult to determine what is actually correct and what is not in
terms of ethics since people's ethics can differ from one another. In many cases, I believe that decisions should be left to those affected by them. An abortion should be a matter of personal choice, for example, if a woman chooses to have an abortion. It is the person's decision whether to undergo a vasectomy or if an elderly person decides that they do not wish to receive life support as they become vegetative. It is their business. It is not my belief that my own opinions should be considered important in the life of another person. The same way I would not want someone to decide if I should stay on a ventilator for three years just in case I awoke, I would not want to make that decision for someone else.
