Personal example 1
Breaking a Promise
Provide Necessary
details
Virtue Ethics
Kantian Ethics
Utilitarian Ethics
I promised my Mom I would put our two-
family cats of 16 years to sleep holding them. However, I brought them to the vet and said my goodbyes waiting in the lobby until the vet came to bring me into the exam
room after they had both passed away.
According to Virtue ethics, the promise made
to my mom to stay with our family pets as they were put to sleep would be the appropriate action
and response demonstrating courage. According to Kantian ethics we should keep our promises. It is always our duty to act morally regardless of desire to do so. According to Utilitarian ethics, there are not any
penalties or results of my broken promise to my mom as long as she never finds out. The consequence would be her not asking me to handle pets at end of life in future instances, which would be the best
outcome for all.
Personal example 2
Telling a Lie
Provide Necessary
details
Virtue Ethics
Kantian Ethics
Utilitarian Ethics
When my daughter was young, I told her Santa Claus was a real man who brought gifts to children that were very good and deserving throughout the year on Christmas.
According to Virtue ethics, it would not be appropriate to lie to teach a child that good behavior is rewarded with gifts. Good behavior
has its own rewards teaching us the habit of obedience and self-
discovery along the way. Tell the truth. According
to Kantian ethics, it is never appropriate to lie.
This would teach a child that lying to achieve good behavior rewards the child with physical things. Good behavior is
something a child should do as the morally
right action. According to Utilization ethics, is it is acceptable
to lie if it brings the greatest good. This supports lying to children to achieve good behavior. Acting good brings the greatest
good to the largest number of children.
Short Answer Questions
1.
Which theory or theories (out of those listed above) could you use to justify breaking a promise and telling a lie? Utilitarian ethics allows telling a lie or breaking a promise if brings good to the greatest number.
2.
How might you respond if someone broke a promise to you or told a lie? Seek for understanding
of why the person felt the need to lie, practice grace thinking of how I would have handled had I been in their position, and forgiveness as God forgives us. 3.
How might you respond in a supportive manner that recognizes the feelings of others yet still holds them accountable for their moral decisions? Understand, but must follow the law and consequences of actions.
