For this reflection, I will discuss the case study “The Protective Parent.” In this case study the underage daughter was diagnosed with cancer for the second time, her mother asked the physician to keep this diagnosis from her daughter as she was not aware of having cancer in the first place. The mother stated she already had problems and did not need her daughters to worry. Looking at this case from the utilitarian perspective, I would go along with what the mother asked of me, as keeping the daughter in the dark made the situation better for her family and close relatives. Not sharing the diagnosis also kept the girl's friends in the dark, eliminating worry from them as well. Additionally, keeping the daughter unaware of the diagnosis would also keep her from worrying about her health and allow her to live a “normal” life, bringing her more happiness.
In this situation, I can understand the utilitarian perspective and acknowledge the fact that
the child is a minor. However, I cannot entirely agree with withholding health information from the person it affects the most. Given that the daughter is currently 17, one could assume that her treatment for leukemia would span into her adulthood, and at that point, the doctor would be required to share this information with her. Hiding the information from her now would establish
a relationship of distrust with the physician. Furthermore, If the daughter were made aware of the
diagnosis, she would have more control over her treatment plan, recovery, and lifestyle adjustments to ensure a better outcome.
