PICOT Question: “In persons diagnosed depression (P), does the combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and antidepressants (I) compared to antidepressants alone (C) reduce depressive symptoms and improve the quality of life (O) over three months (T)?” The assigned two articles offer great insights into applications of theoretical and conceptual framework in research. There is a grey line between theoretical frameworks conceptual frameworks in terms of their definition and use in research. A novice researcher is often torn between the two terms which can be so confusing. Either, Connelly (2014) and Green (2014) in their review reveal that the terms theoretical and conceptual go hand in hand with regard to research. Connelly (2014) is of the opinion that the terms are not as formal and not as developed as formal research. The reason for this argument may be found in Green (2014) article in which the author states that theoretical and conceptual frameworks are terms that are constantly used in research but seldom explained. However, theoretical and conceptual frameworks have significant contributions in research design such as testing if theory works in a population (Connelly, 2014). Additionally, theoretical and conceptual frameworks can be used to compare findings of a study in event that using a different instrument is not plausible (Green, 2014). Use of a framework should help the researcher to order her thoughts and organise the way the data would be represented (Green, 2014). Either, theoretical or conceptual framework should not be added to a study just for the sake of it but there should be correlation between the theory, the problem under study and the research method (Connelly, 2014). In reviewing the collected evidence of my proposed study there is theoretical and conceptual framework being use. This is outlined in a conceptual map (Gray, Grove & Sutherland, 2016) outlined below.
